The purpose of this course is closely related to the mission statement, especially to "innovative and ethical leaders who possess a ʻFrontier Spirit.ʼ

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

This course provides an overview of the topics and issues in Organizational Psychology. We will look at themes including work motivation and commitment, job attitudes, stress and overwork, diversity management, teamwork and leadership, group dynamics, organizational communication, and crisis management. Students will be introduced to theories in the field and discuss their application to real life. Lectures will be conducted in conjunction with case discussion to facilitate student understanding of theories and concepts of organizational psychology.

Students will acquire understanding of behaviors and human resource management that facilitate the function of an organization. The goal is for students to be able to scrutinize the issues of actual organizations that impede the healthy management of its workers and client relationships. Students will also learn to appreciate the significance of governance and leadership.

1) Preparation
Students are to come prepared to each class having done reading assignments, and to make notes about their stance on the cases such as to guide them in their participation in the discussions (estimated 4 hours of preparation)
2) Feedback on final exam
Correct answers on the final exam will be provided on Google Classroom.
3) Use of the Central Information Center
Use of library and information resources are highly encouraged for preparation before each class, and for the group presentation.

第1日(Day1)

1) Motivation, commitment, job satisfaction
Motivated people are more productive, make fewer mistakes, are more focused and committed, and reap greater satisfaction from their work. What motivates people, and hence prevent job turnover?

2) Case 1: Differences in job attitudes with culture
We will look at a case of misperception of expectations of the job between cultures.

第2日(Day2)

1) Group behavior and leadership
People in organizations work in groups. It is necessary for them to coordinate their work to allow for maximum efficiency and productivity. Group dynamics study the processes that affect group work. Groups are guided by leaders, and we will look at what makes for good leadership, and the traits and skills of good leaders.

2) Case 2: Contingent leadership
When the conditions surrounding a group's functioning change, the same leader might not be able to be effective. Successful leadership requires a change in roles. We will discuss how a good leader in one situation might not be the best one in another.

第3日(Day3)

1) Diversity in the workplace
DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) has been of concern to modern organizations. What is diversity, and how should it be dealt with?

2) Case 3: The failure of DEI
DEI is a goal strived to be me by most organizations. But does it really lead to effective management? We'll look at some situations in which DEI might not be the best idea.

第4日(Day4)

1) Communication in the organization
Communication skills necessary for the workplace, particularly between superior and subordinate, and how the management and workers communicate will be focused upon.

2) Case 4: Climate issues
Corporate culture and workplace climate are the most common reasons why people decide to quit. How the leader creates the workplace atmosphere, and how the company structures the culture under which the system works is of the utmost importance.

第5日(Day5)

1) Career development
Reducing worker turnover and increasing their retention is crucial to a good corporate climate. Organizations invest time and effort in training their workers to acquire job skills, so it makes sense that they open up a pathway for their career advancement. If not, they will seek other workplaces that will.

2) Case 5: Crisis management: The case of runaway Toyotas
Toyota was plagued with quality issues in the 2000's, and in one highly publicized incident, a family of five was killed in a runaway Lexus crash. We will discuss Toyota's response to the crisis.

第6日(Day6)

1) Work stress, burnout and other negative effects of the workplace
Ineffective leadership may cause much stress upon the worker. Maintaining mental health and well-being of the worker is the responsibility of the organization.

Case 6: Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing of America and sexual harassment
We will discuss the case of sexual harassment at the MMMA plant in which the company was ordered to pay $34 million in damages to victims.

第7日(Day7)

1) Group presentation
2) Group presentation
Groups will present findings of organizational strategy differences across cultures, companies and workplaces.
Final exam: latter half of the second class of the day.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Class contribution will be assessed based on participation in the case discussions. A group presentation will be done at the last sessions, and members will rate each other as peer assessment of how each person contributed to the presentation. A final exam will be conducted to test students on their knowledge of what had been taught.
