This course aims to equip participants with critical understanding of the modern knowledge- and innovation-based businesses so that they possess a "frontier spirit" to take initiatives to enhance the knowledge base as well as the innovation capability of businesses and society at large.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

By taking part in this course, participants will be aroused of their interests and attention on knowledge management (KM) programs implemented in business organizations. In the first two days, participants will explore the issues of knowledge acquisition and creation and its subsequent internal dissemination. Participants will also be asked to (re-)consider the role of information technology (IT) in KM – is it a useful tool or an unjustified obsession? In the last two days, participants will go through the topics of knowledge retention and protection – how organizations can protect and capture the values of their valuable knowledge in the long run?

By taking part in this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe and explain the essential components of successful KM programs.
2. Critically evaluate the role of IT in KM.
3. Suggest ways to achieve a balance between sharing and protecting knowledge.

Participants should allow at least 3 hours of preparation time per case. There are around 71 pages of main content in total across the seven assigned cases.

A laptop computer is required for electronic distribution of handouts on the day of the class.

Final report assignment : Reflective essay.
Assignment outline: Please refer to the instructions posted on Google Classroom.
Deadline : Approximately 1 week after the course has ended.
Submission method : Please submit to Google Classroom.
Feedback: Marked assessment rubrics will be returned to participants.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Dr. Law is an Associate Professor in the area of management at NUCB Business School. He gained his PhD from City University of Hong Kong. His primary research interests include knowledge management and human resource management. His work has appeared in renowned international journals such as European Management Journal, Human Resource Management Review, and Journal of Knowledge Management. Two of his research work won best-paper and research awards in 2013 and 2016 respectively. At his current university, Dr. Law received Teaching Awards for the academic years 2020/21 (Outstanding), 2021/22, and 2022/23 as well as Research Award for the academic year 2020/21.

(実務経験 Work experience)


Prior to joining NUCB, Dr Law worked at the Open University of Hong Kong, where he started his academic career and rose quickly from Assistant Lecturer to Lecturer to Assistant Professor during his nine years of tenure. He has extensive experiences in delivering business management courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as supervising research and dissertations.
