授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

Students increasingly study, work, and collaborate in environments where cultural background and language ability differ. This course provides concrete skills for communicating clearly, managing misunderstandings, and working productively in mixed international groups. Students will learn how social norms, history, and media shape perspectives, which helps prevent conflict and misinterpretation in academic and professional settings. The course prepares students to engage responsibly with people from Japan, Asia, and the wider world in real-life situations they are likely to encounter.

The goal for this course is:

- To develop students’ ability to interact and collaborate effectively in culturally and linguistically diverse academic and professional settings.
- To build students’ practical understanding of how social norms, historical context, and media influence communication and interpretation across cultures.
- To foster ethical and reflective approaches to intercultural exchange, including awareness of power imbalances and responsibility for mutual understanding.
- To prepare students to apply intercultural communication skills to real-world situations involving Japan, Asia, and international partners.

Preparation

Students are expected to study each case and prepare their own answers to the questions in the assignment files. Participants should allow at least 3 hours of preparation time per case.

Class Discussion

This class is based on open discussion, and students are encouraged to exchange their opinions with their classmates. During these discussions, students are expected to think flexibly and to refine or adjust their views. They should practice active listening, exchange constructive feedback with classmates, and learn to offer and receive critique graciously.

Presentation

Students will give a group presentation on a topic of choice related to one of the themes in the course. Presentation duration and schedule will be adjusted according to class conditions.

Final report

Students will write a reflection essay on the class to be submitted through Google Classroom one week after the end of the course. The evaluation rubric will be discussed in class.

Students are encouraged to use the Central Information Center (Library) for assessing relevant material about this course for self-study and final report writing.

Given the strong emphasis on class contribution in our active learning environment, the instructor takes student participation seriously and evaluates it accordingly. Students should be prepared to actively participate in both small-group discussions and whole-class discussions.

  1. Active participation and shared learning is at the core of the case method learning.Participants are asked to limit their use of electronic devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones) during classroom sessions in support of this model. Even with permission granted, devices should only be used in the classroom in service to the case discussion. Online searches and generative AI tools, even if related to the case discussion, are discouraged while class is in session.
  2. Students are prohibited from using the course materials (including cases) distributed by the university for any purpose other than participation in the designated class.Students must not input, process or test course materials with any artificial intelligence (AI) tools, bots, software, or platforms without the author’s permission. These actions violate the terms of use for the course materials and may also constitute copyright infringement.
