This course will consider how globalisation relates to business and society in a global context. It will look at a variety of global case studies, facilitating students to develop a greater understanding of how New Asia and the rest of the world interacts.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

With this course, students will deepen their understanding of the relationship between globalisation and current international relations. They will look at the historic development of globalisation and bring it up to date with how globalisation has evolved throughout the years and how it will continue to change in the future. From the invention of globalisation they will examine how different countries have benefited and suffered and look at the current national rhetoric of de-globalisation.

By studying this course, students will be able to critique academic papers written on the subject of globalisation and apply geographical theory to what they have read.
Students will develop their ability to synthesize ideas from theoretical readings, case studies, class discussions and their own experiences into effective oral and written arguments.

This course will enable students to understand current events in the global economy within their historical context. They will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of how globalisation connects to national and international economics and politics. They will be able to critique academic papers written on the subject of globalisation and apply geographical theory to what they have read.
Students will develop their ability to synthesize ideas from theoretical readings, case studies, class discussions and their own experiences into effective oral and written arguments.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

Each week students will prepare for class by reading a case study, a well-known theoretical perspective, and writing a short preparatory report for three of those. Students should expect to spend 3 hours preparing for each class. Required assessments include three preparation reports, class participation and a final paper. Students will receive written feedback on reports and oral feedback on in-class participation.

Active participation and shared learning is at the core of the case method learning.Participants are asked to limit their use of electronic devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones) during classroom sessions in support of this model. Even with permission granted, devices should only be used in the classroom in service to the case discussion. Online searches and generative AI tools, even if related to the case discussion, are discouraged while class is in session.
  2. 担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Darron Gray is an experienced educator with over 20 years in the education sector. He received his Masters of Education from the University of Cambridge in 2013, having previously received his teacher status from the Canterbury Christchurch University.
As a graduate of Physical Geography from University of Wolverhampton Darron has a passion with the outdoors and has travelled extensively to satisfy his geographical curiosity. His undergraduate thesis was a study of glaciers in south-west Norway.
As an educator Darron has also led many field trips, including trips to Wales, Iceland, Northern Thailand and South Africa. He is also an Award Leader for the International Award.

(実務経験 Work experience)


Darron has worked in education for over 20 years. Before joining NUCB he was the Assistant Headteacher at a high achieving International School in Bangkok, Thailand. Before working in Thailand Darron worked in Borneo and also taught at a very well respected school in Cambridgeshire, UK.
Darron previously worked in Japan between 1999 - 2007, when he was a teacher to all age groups before working as a tour guide for Intrepid Travel, a well known Australian travel company with a sustainable tourism business model.
