The casestudies will assist students to develop their "Frontier Spirit" to equip them to succeed in the globalised business reality.
In this course, we will use active learning to explore the world of corporate finance, more specifically areas in business valuation for Initial Public Offering, business expansion, improvement of shareholder value and efficient use of resources. We will use the case study approach to breathe life into the finance concepts and understand how they are applied in the business world.
Able to analyse financial numbers and use them to make company recommendations.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

In this course, we will use active learning to explore the world of corporate finance, more specifically areas in business valuation for Initial Public Offering, business expansion, improvement of shareholder value and efficient use of resources. We will use the case study approach to breathe life into the finance concepts and understand how they are applied in the business world. In individual assignments we will also revisit net present value, internal rate of return and the cost of capital models together with the other finance models we touched upon in the earlier finance models to more complex real world finance questions.

Subject topics will be taught using case studies. Pre-reading is essential. MCQ, Quizzes and questions will be provided before class to facilitate understanding of related information and relevant case studies. All preparations should be done before class. Presentation, discussion and exchange of ideas will be done during class.

8 hours are recommended for class preparations.

Attempt MCQ or short quiz regarding the topics 1 hour
Read case studies 2 hours
Prepare answer answers for the case studies 4 hours

In class: feedback provided immediately

Week 1: Introduction to Corporate Finance
Describe the evolution of the fintech landscape and the various companies involved. Develop an awareness of the magnitude of capital investments and acquisitions in/of fintech companies.

Week 2: Application of financial and finance theories and analysis tools to evaluate “best” strategic decision for a small business
Apply theory and analysis tools to evaluate the current resources, capabilities and core competencies of a small business and evaluate future revenue growth opportunities.

Week 3: Financial statement analysis and introduction to supply chain finance
Apply finance skills on accounting ratios and cashflow analysis to derive business decisions.

Week 4: Finance Capital Budgeting Simulation
Evaluate a diverse set of competing investment proposals and make decisions regarding 27 separate proposals over a 5 year period.

Week 5: Financing and impact of financial models
Evaluate the valuation of Snap, discuss IPO process and equity offerings.

Week 6: Generating Higher Value Strategy
Analyses the rationale for and implications of enhanced shareholder communications, i.e. communication with external constituents.

Week 7: Perform financial forecasting, valuation techniques and understand the role of research analysts in capital markets
Evaluate financial information using net present valuation and other techniques and information to consider an expansion and when selling equity to outside investors.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Ho May May qualified as an Associate Chartered Accountant (“ACA”) under the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in 2007 after training with Ernst and Young in London. In 2017, she became a Fellow Chartered Accountant (“FCA”) under the ICAEW. In 2019, she was also awarded Business and Finance Professional (“BFP”) under the ICAEW. She is also a Singapore Chartered
Accountant and holds an MSc in International Business from the University of Lancaster, UK.

She has experience in financial auditing at Ernst and Young before moving on to regulatory reporting at Merrill Lynch and later the Royal Bank of Scotland. In 2020, she will be taking up the position of Visiting Professor at Hosei University in Tokyo, Japan. Since 2011, she has embarked on an academic and writing career drawing on her experiences and expertise.
