NUCB's mission is to educate innovative and ethical leaders who possess a frontier spirit and to create knowledge that advances business and society. Under the macro university mission, this course aims to introduce competitive strengths, strategies, and actions of Japanese firms to students.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

This course helps to prepare students to achieve the university's mission.
Japan is the third largest economy in the world. With such a large size of economy, Japanese firms not only have significantly contributed to the world economy, but also have been prominent in many aspects of global business. Since Japanese firms spread widely in a variety of industries, this course aims to understand Japanese firms and industries from the perspectives of corporate strategies and business operations. This course will start from an introduction to the relationship between Japanese economy and the world economy, then explore the Japanese industries, and finally study the strategies and operations of Japanese forms.

By the end of the course, students should be able to understand Japanese economy, Japanese firms, and, particularly, major corporate strategies and business operations taken by Japanese firms.

This course allocates 30% of the time in delivering lectures and 70% of the time in case study and discussion. Students are required to submit papers on case analysis. Feedbacks will be provided on an individual basis.

1. Case Exam is referred to as short tests including true/false, multiple-choice, and short-answer questions.
2. Attendance is mandatory. Make-up quizzes/exams will not be provided for any unexcused absence.
3. Students will be grouped for group presentation purpose. Peer evaluation will be conducted by group members.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Prof. George Wang received his MBA degree from University of Connecticut, USA, and his PhD degree from Imperial College London, UK.
Prior to his academic career in Japan, he has served at University of Colorado Denver (USA) and National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (Taiwan).
His research interest is on corporate finance, corporate governance, and investment appraisal.
In addition to academics, Dr. Wang has rich industry work experience, such as consultant, chief financial manager, and independent board director at several publicly listed companies (PLCs).

2. Associate Professor in Economics, University of Colorado Denver, USA.
