授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

Japan is third largest economy of the world with amazingly smaller population and area compared to other large economies. Rise of Japanese economy after world war II till the lost decade explains the economic shift from manufacturing sector to services. Japanese electronics giants are now trying to struggle in presence of recent era innovations. On the other hand, service sector companies with stat of the art technology are innovating and expanding aggressively. Besides shift in basic economic structure Japanese business practices are evolving with the passage of time, corporate culture is getting more open and diverse compared to few decades ago. The course is designed to explain Japan’s economic shift from world largest exporter of manufactured products to consumer-based economy with huge demand for technologically advanced products. Topics from economic change to demographic change, manufacturing to value addition, homogeneity to diversity will be part of cases and discussion. Also, the course can be helpful for the students who want to know about “Rise of Asia” and its impact on world economy.

Course Approach
The course contents will include case studies, lecture handouts, class presentations and other discussion materials brought into the class by instructor. Readings (cases and discussion material) are assigned for each class; students are expected to complete the readings beforehand. Active participation is required and expected.

Feedback
Evaluation and feedback on quizzes, assignments/presentations will be provided.

授業調査に対するコメント Comment on Course Evaluation

Students are evaluated continuously during the course. Class engagement and discussions, case assignments, in-class activities, quizzes and assignments are part of evaluation scheme.
Further information about the case assignments and final report will be given on “Google Classroom” portal. Case assignments must be submitted before case discussions as per given deadlines.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Dr. Hakeem is an associate professor at NUCB Business School, Nagoya University of Commerce and Business. He earned his doctorate and master degrees from the Graduate School of Economics and Management, Tohoku University, Japan, and attended Harvard Business School (HBS), Harvard University for executive education. He worked as an adjunct professor in renowned institutions including, Burgundy School of Business, France, Department of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIS), Hosei University, Japan, and the Graduate School, Tohoku University of Community Service and Science, Japan. He received various awards and scholarships during his academic career, including the Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT) and JSPS Fellowship at Tohoku University. He has published a number of articles and participated in a series of conferences. His research interests include but are not limited to International Business, Regional Sustainability, Strategic Management, and Network Science.

Dr. Hakeem's professional experience includes work in Investment Management, Financial Consultancy, Education, Training, and Career Counselling in different organizations.
