授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

This course will explore some of the main fields of Business Law that are important for companies that operate in a globalized world, among which are trade in goods, the provision of services, product warranty, intellectual property and alternative dispute resolution. In this course the instructor will use case method teaching and give students projects to complete. These projects require all students to actively participate and develop their frontier spirit.

Course Approach
The course contents will include lecture handouts, class presentations, case studies and other discussion materials brought into the class by the instructor. Readings (cases or discussion material) are assigned for each class; students are expected to complete the readings and prepare a brief report beforehand. Active participation during classes is required.

2. Corporate Governance.
While corporate governance has traditionally focused on the maximization of shareholder value, there are growing expectations for companies to contribute more to society and the consumer market in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) responsibilities.

3. Contract Law for Trade in Goods
International trade is now so ubiquitous around the world that there is a growing trend for laws to be harmonized in order to limit domestic protectionist legislation and promote the free exchange of goods.

4. Services and Labor
The laws governing the free movement of workers and service providers across different countries and jurisdictions are formulated by international labor standards.

5. Product Warranty
The business model for planned obsolescence in a growing consumer society presents a significant challenge for contemporary legal standards of product warranty.

6. Intellectual Property
WIPO is entrusted with defining and protecting international intellectual property rights based on the socioeconomic imperative to support innovation and development.

7. Alternative Dispute Resolution
ADR involves regulatory processes to help contractual parties resolve disputes through negotiation, mediation and compromise as a cheaper and more time-efficient alternative to litigation in courts.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Anthony Townley completed his Master (MA) and Doctoral (PhD) degrees in Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia). Anthony previously completed a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia) and a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Asian Studies (BA) at Griffith University (Brisbane, Australia).

Anthony has accumulated 25 years of varied professional work experience, most recently as the Director of Academic Writing at at Koç University in Istanbul. He has also worked as a commercial lawyer in Sydney and as an English language instructor, in a variety of teaching and administrative roles in Australia, Turkey and Japan. His special teaching areas include: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Academic Writing, Legal Writing and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and he is currently undertaking sociolinguistic research of legal/business discourse practices in Japan.
