Course Overview

Misson Statementとの関係性 / Connection to our Mission Statement

Importance of this course

This course aims to strengthen certain fundamentals in mathematics, statistics and probability that would better prepare students for technical elements in economics and finance courses. Furthermore, it can contribute to students’ ability to analyze information and data in case studies.

Achievement Goal

Learning Goals

LG1 Critical Thinking
LG2 Diversity Awareness
LG4 Effective Communication

Learning Outcomes

If students complete the course successfully, they should be able to:
o demonstrate further mathematical and statistical knowledge,
o apply mathematics at varying levels to aid decision-making,
o construct appropriate models and interpret the associated results,
o demonstrate the wide applicability of mathematical models and, at the same time, identifying their limitations and possible misuse.

Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

o Every week students need 0.5 hour to prepare each lecture in advance and at least 2.5 hour to review each lecture.
o As this course is instructed via the traditional teaching method, the first 20 minutes of each lecture from Week 2 onwards are devoted to students’ questions regarding the previous week’s content.
o There are two quizzes, which cover mathematics and probability respectively. They are reviewed in the last lecture.
o The final report relates to statistics and must be submitted in the last lecture. Comments and feedback are provided two weeks after the submission.
