1. Relevance to NUCB Mission Statement
This course aims to enhance students’ English proficiency through TOEIC learning activities mainly focused on Listening and Reading skills. NUCB Mission Statement mentions that one of the missions is to build knowledge to develop the business field and the society. Through this course, students will acquire English as the global language as well as broader views of the society.

2. Importance of this Course
This course provides students to improve their English skills by variety types of learning activities, although the main focus is Listening/ Reading. Students are expected to get a score of over 500 after the course.

3. Achievement Goals
This course aims to motivate students to study English and develop their open-mindedness. Students will be able to achieve an international perspective and cross-cultural communication skills.

[NOTE]
This is a TOEIC course which is recommended for the 1st grade students to take TOEIC.
Teachers may ask students to make slides and/or documents, so please bring your laptop to the classroom.

1. Course Approach

Exercises of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills
Active learning in groups/ pairs in order to acquire English skill efficiently.
Case lesson(s) with speaking

Case assignment
Preparation for given in-class tasks such as presentations or role plays

Writing tasks with vocabularies which students searched prior to the classes and used in classes

2. Feedback Methods
Interactive lectures allow students to receive individual feedback on both the results of at-home assignments and in-class tasks.

3. Use of Information Center for this course
Students are expected to expose themselves to as much English as possible, by reading/listening/watching materials there to practice using what they already learned in class.

* Each teacher may have different learning approaches, but all touch the 7 units in Term 3.

4. Final Exam- Final Exam content will be comprehensive and include material covered throughout the course

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Sugene Kim is an associate professor of English at Nagoya University of Commerce & Business. (The correct pronunciation of "Sugene" is "スウジン.") She holds a master’s degree in professional English writing and a doctorate in applied linguistics from Ewha Womans University. Her research focuses on academic writing, second language (L2) acquisition, and morphosyntax within the framework of pedagogical grammar. She is particularly interested in examining the cognitive and linguistic strategies utilized by adult L2 learners to address writing difficulties in different rhetorical contexts. Her related research interests include sociolinguistic variation and World Englishes.
