授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course
This is an intermediate level course designed to help better prepare you to take the ETS TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT). The curriculum of this course connects learning and assessment with skill-building, using authentic test materials from the TOEFL iBT. You will develop your skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing (the four organizational sections of the TOEFL iBT). This course will also focus on developing both independent and integrated skills needed for critical thinking and communicative competence that are vital for success in the TOEFL iBT. The overall goal of this course is to help you develop academic skills in English and to build test-taking confidence through practice.

The topics studied each week directly relate to TOEFL exam topics. The TOEFL exam is an international exam, and therefore the majority of themes are global in nature and require students to think globally rather than locally. Many of the topics may be new to students and challenging. However, students are expected to use critically thinking as global citizens to navigate ideas and express themselves effectively.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor
Xuehong He, better known as Stella, is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of International Studies at the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business. As a teacher-scholar, Stella’s teaching and research experience has come from China and the United States. She has taught English and Chinese as second/foreign languages from novice to advanced levels to children and adults in face-to-face and online settings. She has also offered face-to-face and online teacher education courses and workshops to pre-service and in-service second/foreign language instructors at undergraduate and graduate levels. Stella’s research focuses on Instructed Second Language Acquisition, with special attention to teaching and learning English and Chinese vocabulary. She has published and presented her research findings at well-established journals and conferences, such as TESOL Quarterly and the annual conference of American Association for Applied Linguistics.
