In line with NUCB's mission statement, this course aims to educate and inspire students to become innovative and ethical leaders through the medium of English. They are expected to grasp and take on the ideal of “Frontier Spirit”, gain a global perspective, and improve their ability to create knowledge in English for the advancement of business and society.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

This entry-level course is designed to prepare students for the TOEFL iBT Test, which is generally required for study abroad programs. It explains key strategies for each of the four sections (Speaking, Reading, Listening, and Writing) in the test and helps students practice these strategies using sample test questions.

Upon successful completion of this course, students can expect to understand what the TOEFL iBT test is, master key test-taking strategies for each of the four sections.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

This is a learner-centered course which requires pre-class preparation, active participation in class, and after-class review. Students are expected to spend at least 60 minutes reading designated pages of the textbook before coming to class. Each class will offer a quick review of several key test-taking strategies in the textbook and some sample test questions that help students practice these strategies. After each class, students will be assigned a set of practice test questions that will help them review what they have learned in class.

Active participation and shared learning is at the core of the case method learning.Participants are asked to limit their use of electronic devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones) during classroom sessions in support of this model. Even with permission granted, devices should only be used in the classroom in service to the case discussion. Online searches and generative AI tools, even if related to the case discussion, are discouraged while class is in session.
  2. Students are prohibited from using the course materials (including cases) distributed by the university for any purpose other than participation in the designated class.Students must not input, process or test course materials with any artificial intelligence (AI) tools, bots, software, or platforms without the author’s permission. 担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Fei Chen is an assistant professor at Nagoya University of Business and Commerce. He holds a BA in English (China University of Political Science and Law), a MSc in Modern Japanese Studies (University of Oxford), and a Ph.D in Interdisciplinary Information Studies (University of Tokyo). He is interested in transnational history, particularly the history of cultural exchange between Japan and China. He co-edited Alternative Representations of the Past: The Politics of History in Modern China (2020) and published his research in peer-reviewed journals like Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Modern Chinese History, International Journal of Asian Studies, Journal of Asian History, and Asian Studies Review.

(実務経験 Work experience)


Before coming to Nagoya, Fei Chen taught at Shanghai Normal University and was a visiting scholar at Harvard-Yenching Institute and University of Tokyo.
