授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of North American literature. Students will read, understand, and respond to a critically acclaimed novel that has recently been turned into a movie franchise. Central themes explored include nature, culture, diversity, ethics, and the the idea of what constitutes truth. The interpretation of these major themes will be a central focus of class discussion and student presentations.

This course is concerned with improving confidence and ability in reading and studying literature written in English. The aim is to contribute to the mission of developing critical thinking and communication skills, with attention given to the following objectives:
• To acquire the tools necessary to interpret texts written in English.
• To gain knowledge of a critically acclaimed Anglophone text and to situate it within its literary and historical contexts.
• To increase confidence in discussing literature and media with others.
• To contribute to English writing skills by confronting new vocabulary and syntax.
• To understand how to use fiction as a means of engaging with the culture(s) in which it is produced.
• To acquire the tools necessary to interpret texts written in English.
• To gain knowledge of a critically acclaimed Anglophone text and to situate it within its literary and historical contexts.
• To increase confidence in discussing literature and media with others.
• To contribute to English writing skills by confronting new vocabulary and syntax.

Please arrive in class prepared to discuss the week’s reading: what happened, what you liked and disliked, and anything you found interesting or confusing.
Keep up with the assigned reading every week. You do not need to have fully understood every word of the reading, but please do your best. We will discuss the parts that were difficult or hard to understand.
You will be marked absent if:
- you did not attempt the reading for homework
- you do not bring the required text to class
I am happy to meet with you at any point during the semester to discuss your progress and any concerns you may have. If I am in my office feel free to come and speak to me, or we can arrange a time to meet by email.
