授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

The main goal of this course is to prepare you to learn your business writing skills in English. Since you will be expected to write an emails and memos in English throughout your career, it is important that you are able to deliver your messages clearly in writing.

In order to express yourself clearly when writing in English, you need to have a well-developed vocabulary, adequate knowledge of English grammar as well as the ability to apply that knowledge to your writing, and an understanding of reader/writer expectations in English. Readers expect writers to follow certain conventions, and meeting these expectations will help you communicate your ideas more effectively to your audience.

This learner-centered course will be guided by a lecture. Students will have several chances to practice writing in-class essays under time constraints. The students will also learn grammar as necessary so that they will be able to use complex and varied sentence patterns effectives in their writing. Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the term, and will be supplemented with individual work.

授業調査に対するコメント Comment on Course Evaluation

Regular assignments will provide students with a basic evaluation of their learning and study efforts, representing 20% of the final grade. Final exams will represent 30% of the final grade, and the in-class quizzes will represent 30%. The remaining 20% will come from class participation.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Jongbong Lee is an assistant professor in the faculty of international studies at NUCB. Before coming to NUCB, he taught English and Korean in various locations in Korea and the U.S. His main area of research interest is second language writing, particularly the interface between the fields of second language writing and second language acquisition. Much of his current work focuses on the effects of genre and tasks on linguistic features in second language learners’ writing. He conducts research on other issues in eye-tracking, language socialization, interactional feedback, and language assessment. His publications have appeared in the journals such as Cognition as well as a variety of edited collections with top presses.
