2. Students are expected to attend all scheduled class meetings. Class sessions should not be missed unless an emergency situation takes place, in which case students should notify the instructor via email before class.
3. Use of phone, tablet, smart watch and other communication devices for purposes other than learning are strictly prohibited during class.

International Accounting Comparative Analysis Group Project:
This project allow the students to apply conceptual knowledge and analytical skills learned from the course to critically research and perform comprehensive financial accounting analysis on two multinational corporations. The progress of this project will be distributed into several stages during the semester and the project represents 25% of the total grade grade. The group should also solve a question from the textbook related to the project (refer to the syllabus outline & schedule). Unsatisfactory progress of the project can affect your final grade. For this term assignment, the class will be divided into groups of two to three students.
Stage 1: Selection
You should decide on the members of your group. In addition, your group will choose two multinational companies from the same industry that you are interested in -- one from Japan and one from a country outside of Japan -- in which you have a strong interest. Your group should obtain the annual reports for the companies you choose. The name of two companies and members of your group should be submitted in a memo at the end of the class.
Stage 2: Business Environment Research
You should conduct library and Internet research to identify the current business environment and events affecting your chosen country, company, and industry. You are expected to cite a number of sources from business websites, professional bodies and accounting firms. You should also have obtained and become familiar with the annual reports of the two companies. Progress of Stage 2 (Drafts of Chapter 1, 2 & 3) should be submitted at the end of the class.
Stage 3: Accounting Practices Analysis
You should begin your financial analysis and think about the presentation of your results. Also, you should identify similarities and differences in the accounting practices of your chosen countries and companies. If your company follows the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) or national accounting standards, you should address the differences between accounting standards used in your country and the Japanese standards. Progress of Stage 3 (Drafts of Chapter 4) should be submitted at the end of the class.
Stage 4: Comparative Financial Statements Analysis
You should begin conducting a comprehensive financial statements analysis of your two companies. A report describing your progress on Stage 4 (Drafts of Chapter 5) and indicating the work to be done is due.
Stage 5: Presentation and Report Submission
Your group will make a presentation for 20 minutes followed by a 5 minutes Q&A session. The term paper, due at Week 14, is a paper that includes the following chapters:
1. Introduction
2. Current business environment of your chosen country
3. Current business environment of your industry
4. Accounting practices comparison of the two countries and companies.
5. Two-year financial analysis of your two companies presented and discussed in comparative form
6. Interpretation of results in light of the business environment and with special emphasis on the effects of differences in accounting practices.
