授業の目的（意義） / Importance of this course
This course aims to overview English linguistics, focusing on phonetics, phonology, morphology, and the basics of syntax in term 3. We will see (i) how the rules are derived from examples and how the rules can explain other examples, and (ii) how the similarities and differences between English and Japanese can be explained upon those rules. By gaining deeper knowledge of English and Japanese, students are expected to acquire abilities needed for a global leader.
This course provides students not only knowledge of English linguistics but also opportunities to get familiarized with the methods used in linguistic research. In order to gain credit, based on NUCB Diploma Policy, students are thus expected to learn actively by studying inside and outside class and try their best to use the knowledge in class activities. Since the content of each class is based on the content of previous classes, reviewing what they have learned after class and preparing their homework are essential for succeeding in this course.
Weekly assignments also include group activities based on the knowledge they learned in classes. Students are expected to first think individually about the assignments, and then discuss in pairs or groups to reach a conclusion. They will be required to prepare for and participate in class discussions.

Group activities will be assigned for each session. Students are expected to first think individually about the assignments, and then discuss in pairs or groups to reach a conclusion. The activities do not necessarily have an absolute “correct” answer; students are expected to practice and acquire the way to (i) form a hypothesis from a set of linguistic data and (ii) see whether other data can be explained by the hypothesis. Students are also expected to present their ideas to others during class.
