The present course is the fourth in a four-term course series offered to 1st year students in the Faculty of International Studies. The course will equip the students with essential English communication skills and global competences as stated in the mission of the University, such as "frontier spirit" and professional abilities necessary to bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world. The students will learn relevant business English vocabulary as well as communication strategies, which will enable them to successfully navigate the complex world of global business.

By the end of this course, the students will demonstrate knowledge of:
1. TOEIC test structure
2. TOEIC relevant vocabulary and grammatical structures
3. TOEIC test strategies
4. Communication strategies in business situations
5. Critical thinking and decision-making skills

学修到達目標 / Achievement Goal


The aim of this course is to prepare the students for the TOEIC tests in May and November.
The final goal of this course is to provide English communication skills and knowledge equivalent to a TOEIC score of minimum 500 points.

1. TOEIC Skills: Students will learn strategies for taking the TOEIC test.
2. Speaking: Students will have the opportunity to practice speaking English in class and receive feedback on their progress.
3. Listening: Students will practice listening to English, particularly in relevance to the listening section fo the TOEIC test.
4. Reading: Students will complete reading tasks that will prepare them for the reading section of the TOEIC test.
5. Grammar: Grammar will be taught with a focus on the needs of the students.
6. Vocabulary: Students will have access to (and be encouraged to study) a comprehensive vocabulary list recommended for achieving a CEFR A2 level at the TOEIC® Listening and Reading score.

This course will be guided by a lecture, which will be supported by independent study completed by the students outside of class.
30% of the grade for this course will be made up of independent vocabulary practice.
Participant-Centered Learning (PCL) and case method will be incorporated.
The course will feature 3 business case studies, which will be prepared outside of class and discussed in class.
Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the semester and will be supplemented with individual work.

Active participation and shared learning is at the core of the case method learning.Participants are asked to limit their use of electronic devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones) during classroom sessions in support of this model. Even with permission granted, devices should only be used in the classroom in service to the case discussion. Online searches and generative AI tools, even if related to the case discussion, are discouraged while class is in session.
  2. Students are prohibited from using the course materials (including cases) distributed by the university for any purpose other than participation in the designated class.Students must not input, process or test course materials with any artificial intelligence (AI) tools, bots, software, or platforms without the author’s permission. 担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Ichikawa Yuri holds a PhD in Education at Aichi University of Education. She has been devoting herself to the education of English in secondary schools (Aichi prefecture) and higher education (National Institute of Technology, Toyota College). Her research interests include implementing CLIL, in English classes where students collaborate to learn about social issues and SDGs. She has also engaged in educational activities aimed at fostering global citizenship.
