授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

The primary purpose of this course is to introduce students to principles of effective written communication in academic contexts. Students will be guided through writing processes including drafting, revising, editing, peer evaluation, self-assessment, critical thinking, and appropriate use of evidence. This course will also explore academic vocabulary, model essays, grammar that can be helpful in writing, and writing issues related to plagiarism. Throughout the term, students will produce two essays: one compare-contrast essay and one cause-effect essay. The main goal for this course is to help students write academic essays with confidence and skill.

Students will write two essays throughout the term. Each essay will be written with multiple steps: students will brainstorm ideas, write a draft, receive feedback on the first draft from a peer and the instructor, write a revised draft, conduct self-assessment, and receive feedback on the final draft from the instructor.

授業調査に対するコメント Comment on Course Evaluation

In-class text-book based tests will represent 10% of the final grade. The two essays will represent 50% of the final grade, and 20% will come from class participation. The final exam will represent 20% of the final grade.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Minkyung Kim received her PhD in applied linguistics at Georgia State University in the US. She has various teaching experience including teaching English in South Korea, teaching Korean in the US, and teaching applied linguistics content courses in the US. Her main research interests are second language (L2) learning and language assessment.
