授業の概要 Course Overview

Misson Statementとの関係性 / Connection to our Mission Statement

This course embarks on a journey to explore fundamental questions: What is language? What is linguistics? And what is the relationship between language and human beings? Together, we will address these inquiries to gain foundational knowledge in English linguistics within the framework of modern linguistics—its structure and function, covering significant areas such as phonetics and phonology (the sound system), morphology and syntax (structure of words and phrases and sentences), semantics (how words related to meaning), and pragmatics (how meanings are generally situational). Then, we attempt to apply the basic knowledge to analyze our everyday language(s) and communications and discuss language's role(s) in the contemporary world.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

The foundational knowledge of English linguistics is invaluable for analyzing the core facets of language, including sound, structure, and meaning, in various forms of communication such as texts, speech, discourses, and narratives, both offline and online. By deepening our understanding of linguistics, we develop a finer lens to compare and reflect upon these facets in our own languages.
Through comparative interpretation, we expand our horizons and recognize the role of language for human beings. A thorough understanding of basic English linguistics lays the groundwork for a deeper appreciation of language, its limitations, and its potential. This knowledge helps us paint a richer picture of the relationship between humans and language, especially in today's world, where pressing existential, ecological, and ideological issues are prevalent.
