This course is designed to guide and assist students to write a 4,000 word thesis step by step. This is a student-centered learning environment where students need to actively participate in each step of the research and writing process as an independent, critical scholar and develop their Frontier Spirit. My primary role is to guide you and help you develop the necessary research and writing skills in English.

You should be able to define your topic as a research question suitable for a graduation thesis and develop a thesis Outline. This will involve clearly understanding your research topic and the organizational structure of the academic thesis. We can also begin writing the Literature Review of your thesis as you undertake research.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

As you choose your own graduation thesis topic, research content will be directly related to your professional interests and career goals. Students will receive written feedback for all written work to assist students with the development of their writing skills and the coherent organization of documents. Each class will also conclude with oral feedback that reflects on student participation in group activities and class discussion.

授業スケジュール Course Schedule

第1日(Day1)

Week 1: We will return our attention to the specific requirements for each section of your research thesis - Introduction / Literature Review / Methodology / Findings & Discussion / Conclusion.

第2日(Day2)

Weeks 2 - 3: We will learn the specific requirements for writing your research question and thesis Outline.

第3日(Day3)

Weeks 4 - 7: As we work on the research question and Outline, we will continue to research and find relevant information for your research topic using the Internet and online databases.

第4日(Day4)

Weeks 8 - 9: We will learn the specific requirements for writing your Literature Review.


第5日(Day5)

Weeks 10 - 11: As we research, we will work on how to effectively use summary and paraphrase to write the Literature Review.

第6日(Day6)

Week 12: We will learn how to identify a "gap" in the Literature Review in order for you to develop an original contribution to the literature with your research thesis.

第7日(Day7)

Weeks 13 - 14: Students will present their Outline and research question for peer review and feedback.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Anthony Townley completed his Master (MA) and Doctoral (PhD) degrees in Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia). Anthony previously completed a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia) and a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Asian Studies (BA) at Griffith University (Brisbane, Australia).

Anthony has accumulated 25 years of varied professional work experience, most recently as the Director of Academic Writing at at Koç University in Istanbul. He has also worked as a commercial lawyer in Sydney and as an English language instructor, in a variety of teaching and administrative roles in Australia, Turkey and Japan. His special teaching areas include: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Academic Writing, Legal Writing and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and he is currently undertaking sociolinguistic research of legal/business discourse practices in Japan.
