本授業は、中東地域の社会と文化を多角的に理解することを通じて、地域・宗教・歴史的背景の異なる人々について論理的に分析する力を養うものである。中東社会の多様性とその動態を批判的に検討することにより、本学の掲げるフロンティア・スピリットに基づく多様性理解および論理的思考力を涵養し、グローバル社会において倫理的判断を伴う意思決定能力を備えた人材の育成に資する。
This course is designed to cultivate students’ capacity for logical analysis of peoples with diverse regional, religious, and historical backgrounds through a multifaceted examination of Middle Eastern societies and cultures. By critically engaging with the diversity and dynamic transformations of Middle Eastern societies, the course advances the University’s Frontier Spirit by fostering a deep understanding of diversity and strengthening students’ logical reasoning skills. In doing so, it contributes to the development of individuals equipped to make ethically informed decisions in an increasingly globalized world.
授業の目的（意義） / Importance of this course
本授業の目的は、歴史・政治・経済・社会・文化が複合的に交錯する多元的地域としての中東への理解を深めることである。国家形成、政治体制、資源経済、宗教実践、日常生活文化など多様な側面を検討することを通じて、受講者が中東社会やイスラームを固定的イメージではなく動的な社会として把握し、現代世界における中東理解の基礎的視座を獲得することを目指す。
The purpose of this course is to deepen students’ understanding of the Middle East as a manifold region in which history, politics, economics, society, and culture intersect in complex ways. Through the examination of its diverse dimensions—including state formation, political systems, resource economies, religious practices, and everyday cultural life—the course aims to enable students to comprehend Middle Eastern societies and Islam not as fixed images but as dynamic social formations, and to acquire foundational perspectives for understanding the contemporary Middle East.

Through this course, students will be expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Students will be able to explain, in their own words, the historical background and socio-cultural characteristics of Middle Eastern societies.
- Students will acquire foundational knowledge of the religious cultures of the Middle East, including Islam, and will be able to examine their representations critically.
- Students will be able to relativize diverse discourses and images concerning the Middle East and articulate their own evidence-based perspectives.
- Students will be able to analyze the challenges of cross-cultural understanding in the global society from multiple perspectives.

学生は、中東地域の社会的・文化的多様性を歴史的文脈の中で総合的に理解する知識を修得するとともに、地域研究の視点から社会現象を分析する基礎的な論理的思考力を身につける。また、宗教・社会・国家の特質に着目した多様性理解を深め、現代世界の諸問題に対して倫理的判断を伴って自らの考えを論理的かつ明瞭に表現する力を養う。
Students will acquire the knowledge necessary to develop a comprehensive understanding of the social and cultural diversity of the Middle East within its historical context, while also cultivating foundational logical reasoning skills for analyzing social phenomena from the perspective of area studies. In addition, by deepening their understanding of diversity with attention to the characteristics of religion, society, and the state, students will develop the ability to articulate their own views logically and clearly, accompanied by ethical judgment, in addressing contemporary global issues.

● 予習・復習について
授業前には、参考文献の関連箇所や適宜提示する資料を読み、事前課題（予習レポート）に取り組む。予習レポートは、授業前日までにGoogle Classroom経由で提出すること。また、毎授業の最後に、ケース討論のまとめ及び「予習レポートの段階で持っていた自分の考えが、授業を通してどう変わったか（あるいは変わらなかったか）」をリフレクションシートに書いて提出してもらう。予習レポートとリフレクションシートをセットで評価する。
授業後は、授業資料をもとに講義内容を復習し、文献、新聞、雑誌、インターネット等のメディアを通じて、自分の興味関心に応じてさらなる理解・考察を深めること。
事前および事後学習の時間は、各100分を目安とします。

「中東」とはどのような地域か内容：中東という地域概念の成立過程と多様性を概観する。「中東」という枠組みの歴史的構築について確認しつつ、地域認識とオリエンタリズムの問題を導入する。

中東社会の形成と国家内容：前近代から近代、特にオスマン帝国解体からの国家形成過程を概観し、植民地支配と国民国家形成が中東社会に与えた影響を検討する。国境線の成立とその歴史的背景を理解する。

中東の国境はなぜ今の形？（オリジナルケース）第3日（Day3）
権威主義と紛争の政治学内容：中東における権威主義体制の特徴とその要因を分析し、中東の政治体制の現状と歴史的背景を批判的に検討する。軍、王制、国際環境など複合的要因に着目する。あわせて、領域紛争の代表的事例としてパレスチナ問題の歴史的背景と政治構造を概観し、国家形成・ナショナリズム・国際政治が交錯する中東政治の複雑性を理解する。

"二つの国家"は実現しないか？（オリジナルケース。変更可能性あり）第4日（Day4）
イスラームと社会—信仰・制度・表象内容：イスラームの基本的枠組みを整理した上で、宗教実践と社会制度や日常生活について具体的に検討する。あわせて、メディアや言説において形成されてきたイスラーム表象の特徴とその問題点を分析し、宗教と社会の関係を多面的に捉える視点を養う。

イスラームは社会をどこまで規定する？（オリジナルケース。変更可能性あり）第5日（Day5）
中東社会の生活文化と多様性内容：家族、ジェンダー、食文化、都市生活などに着目し、中東社会の日常的実践の多様性を検討する。あわせて、中東地域における宗教的多元性にも目を向け、イスラームのみならず、キリスト教、ユダヤ教をはじめとする多様な宗教的伝統が歴史的に共存してきた点を確認する。

資源・経済と社会変動内容：石油資源、レンティア国家論、経済格差の問題を整理し、資源構造が国家体制や社会構造に与えてきた影響を分析する。

日本社会とムスリム内容：日本社会におけるムスリムの生活実態と社会的課題を検討する。中東理解と日本社会の現実を接続し、宗教的・文化的多様性の中で共生を考える視点を養う。

- Active participation and shared learning is at the core of the case method learning.Participants are asked to limit their use of electronic devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones) during classroom sessions in support of this model.
