This course directly aligns with NUCB's mission statement to “educate innovative and ethical leaders who possess a ‘Frontier Spiritʼ and to create knowledge that advances business and society." In this course, students will gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to communicate about historical, social, political, and cultural beliefs as expressed through English and American literature. Students will practice "bridging the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world” by applying their critical thinking skills and contributing to the ongoing academic dialogue inherent in the study of canonical Western literature. The importance of plot and theme will be a central focus of class discussion and student presentations.

Throughout this course, students will:
-Read and respond to a short English novel
-Understand story and plot elements
-Increase their knowledge and usage of advanced vocabulary
-Deepen their understanding of the English language
-Enhance their ability to express themselves and make advanced argumentation in English
-Develop the necessary skills to critically read and interpret literature
-Present on a theme of their choosing

This course is concerned with improving confidence and ability in reading and studying literature written in English. The goal is to contribute to the mission of developing critical thinking and communication skills, with attention given to the following objectives:
• To acquire the tools necessary to interpret texts written in English.
• To gain knowledge of a critically acclaimed Anglophone text and to situate it within its literary and historical contexts.
• To increase confidence in discussing literature and media with others.
• To contribute to English writing skills by confronting new vocabulary and syntax.
• To understand how to use fiction as a means of engaging with the culture(s) in which it is produced.
• To acquire the tools necessary to interpret texts written in English.
• To gain knowledge of a critically acclaimed Anglophone text and to situate it within its literary and historical contexts.

This course will be taught using lectures, small and large group discussion, and presentations.
Students should be prepared to spend approximately 1-2 hours preparing and completing homework BEFORE each weekly class meeting. Keep up with the assigned reading every week. You do not need to have fully understood every word of the reading, but please do your best. We will discuss the parts that were difficult or hard to understand.
You will be marked absent if:
- You did not attempt the reading for homework
To be successful in class, students must complete the required weekly assignments, come to class prepared, and be ACTIVE participants in class. Please arrive in class prepared to discuss the week’s reading: what happened, what you liked and disliked, and anything you found interesting or confusing.
The teacher will provide oral and written feedback on all assignments, either online (Google classroom) or in class.
It is encouraged that students utilize the Central Information Center (library).
