By equipping students with English language skills, this course will facilitate students in becoming innovative and ethical leaders of the world.
Various tasks and activities in this course will also develop students' 'Frontier Spirit' and assist them in developing their abilities to advance business and society in New Asia and beyond.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

The course will teach essential study skills to students to prepare them not only for other courses, but also for taking the TOEIC and participating in Frontier Spirit or NUCB exchange programs with partner universities.
Overall, this course aims to facilitate students in becoming marketable global citizens in a competitive job market.

到達目標 / Achievement Goal

This course seeks to improve students' English language ability in all key areas: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing, Vocabulary and Grammar, but with a special focus on Listening.

Students will develop various listening strategies to enhance their understanding of spoken contents in diverse topics within business contexts. They will also increase their vocabulary and grammar knowledge.

- Learn to recognize parts of speech, make inferences, identify topic and supporting sentences, use collocations and compound nouns, etc.

This course will be guided by lectures, which will be supported by independent study completed by the students. The independent study will include work from the course materials available in the online platform of the textbook. Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the semester, and will be supplemented with individual work. After-class individual and group work is also encouraged to take place in the library.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Xuehong He, better known as Stella, is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of International Studies at the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business. As a teacher-scholar, Stella’s teaching and research experience has come from China and the United States. She has taught English and Chinese as second/foreign languages from novice to advanced levels to children and adults in face-to-face and online settings. She has also offered face-to-face and online teacher education courses and workshops to pre-service and in-service second/foreign language instructors at undergraduate and graduate levels. Stella’s research focuses on Instructed Second Language Acquisition, with special attention to teaching and learning English and Chinese vocabulary. She has published and presented her research findings at well-established journals and conferences, such as TESOL Quarterly and the annual conference of American Association for Applied Linguistics.
