授業の概要 Course Overview

The present course is offered to Business majors. The course will equip the students with essential English communication skills and global competences as stated in the mission of the University, such as "frontier spirit" and professional abilities necessary to bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world. The students will learn relevant business English vocabulary as well as communication strategies, which will enable them to successfully navigate the complex world of global business.

By the end of this course, the students will demonstrate knowledge of:
1. TOEIC test structure
2. TOEIC relevant vocabulary and grammatical structures
3. TOEIC test strategies
4. Communication strategies in business situations
5. Critical thinking and decision-making skills

ATTENTION! This is a TOEIC compulsory subject. The students are expected to sit the June TOEIC test on campus. Failure to do so will result in an 'Incomplete' (不完全履修) grade in this course.

1. TOEIC Skills: Students will learn strategies for taking the TOEIC test.
2. Speaking: Students will have the opportunity to practice speaking English in class and receive feedback on their progress.
3. Listening: Students will practice listening to English, particularly in relevance to the listening section fo the TOEIC test.
4. Reading: Students will complete reading tasks that will prepare them for the reading section of the TOEIC test.
5. Grammar: Grammar will be taught with a focus on the needs of the students.
6. Vocabulary: Students will have access to (and be encouraged to study) a comprehensive vocabulary list recommended for achieving a CEFR B1 level at the TOEIC® Listening and Reading score.

This course will be guided by a lecture, which will be supported by independent study completed by the students outside of class.

35% of the grade for this course will be made up of weekly vocabulary quizzes.

Participant-Centered Learning (PCL) and case method will be incorporated.

The course will feature one business case study, which will be prepared outside of class and discussed in class.

Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the semester and will be supplemented with individual work.

Learning should be your topmost priority. To get a high TOEIC score you must practice English every day for at least 15 minutes.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Prof. Nae holds an MA in translation and a PhD with a dissertation in linguistics from Nagoya University. She has been teaching English to students of all ages and levels for over two decades. Besides an extensive teaching experience, Prof. Nae has been actively involved in research and translation/interpretation work. Her research interests are translation studies, internationalization in higher education, gender studies, and active learning in Japanese clasrooms.
