Business Listening is intended for intermediate students who have studied English previously and need further practice to improve their listening skills. This content-based course uses business-related TED Talks to introduce case studies from different business contexts while integrating academic listening components into lessons.
授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course
This course focuses on understanding and using listening skills and vocabulary to understand a TED Talk. Students will also develop weekly skills to improve their academic listening and note-taking skills using practical exercises that help students to develop their knowledge of listening. Students will also practice discussing the business-related themes through communication tasks based on various business situations.
到達目標 / Achievement Goal
Assignments and tasks will focus on developing note-taking and academic listening skills to improve students’ awareness and confidence. Activities will be repeated and presented in individual and pair work formats. Homework and individual study components provide students with active learning opportunities throughout the course.

The course materials help students develop better approaches to academic listening while exposing them to new and innovative ideas in the business field. Students will improve their confidence by listening to a range of business-related TED Talks.
Strategies: to improve listening approaches and confidence, to learn and use listening strategies (e.g., listening for gist, key words), to use vocabulary-based strategies to listen.
Listening: to improve listening confidence, to learn and use listening strategies (e.g., listen for main details, listen for key words), to search for and identify important information, to create notes, write a summary, and give an opinion about the theme from the TED Talk.
Speaking & Communication: to discuss business-related topics using practiced and spontaneous speech, to accurately describe the main issues discussed in the TED Talks and to give opinions. Students will also be able to ask and respond to questions about one's own and someone else’s opinions.

This course will be guided by a lecture. Students will be supported by pair work and group work in class and independent study will be completed by the students outside of class. The course will enable learners to reflect on their own learning using listening journals.
The grading criteria also involves a participation component during the class period. Active participation during group work is highly encouraged.
