授業の概要 Course Overview

Misson Statementとの関係性 / Connection to our Mission Statement

The present course aligns with the Mission Statement of NUCB "to educate innovative and ethical leaders who possess a ‘Frontier Spiritʼ and to create knowledge that advances business and society. Our undergraduate students will have the ability to bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world." This course will focus on Business English reading and listening skills to foster students' 'frontier spirit', a global perspective, and the ability to contribute to the business world in which English is considered the language of business communication.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

To improve students' business English reading and listening skills, this course focuses on the TOEIC test. Students will learn productive and receptive skills that will enable them to achieve the CEFR B1 level (550-780) on the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test. Students will also continue to learn general English skills such as speaking, listening, reading, grammar and vocabulary.

1. TOEIC Skills: Students will learn strategies for taking the TOEIC test.
2. Speaking: Students will have the opportunity to practice speaking English in class and receive feedback on their progress.
3. Listening: Students will practice listening to English, particularly in relevance to the listening section fo the TOEIC test.
4. Reading: Students will complete reading tasks that will prepare them for the reading section of the TOEIC test.
5. Grammar: Grammar will be taught with a focus on the needs of the students.
6. Vocabulary: Students will have access to (and be encouraged to study) a comprehensive vocabulary list recommended for achieving a CEFR B1 level at the TOEIC® Listening and Reading score.

By the end of this term, students will be able to understand and use advanced level business vocabulary and communication strategies related to health care, housing and property, and banking and finance. Moreover, students are expected to demonstrate abilities to comprehend and produce TOEIC-specific conversations and talks, and will be able to attain a TOEIC score target of minimum 700 points.

This course will be supported by independent study completed by the students outside of class.
Participant-Centered Learning (PCL) and case method will be incorporated.The course will feature three business case studies, which will be prepared outside of class and discussed in class.
Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the term and will be supplemented with individual work.
Students are strongly encouraged to make use of the resources in the Information Center for TOEIC practice.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Prof. Nae holds an MA in translation and a PhD with a dissertation in linguistics from Nagoya University. She has been teaching English to students of all ages and levels for over two decades. Besides an extensive teaching experience, Prof. Nae has been actively involved in research and translation/interpretation work. Her research interests are translation studies, internationalization in higher education, gender studies, and active learning in Japanese clasrooms.
