授業の概要 Course Overview

Misson Statementとの関係性 / Connection to our Mission Statement

The present course is the first in a four-term course offered to 1st year students in the Faculty of International Studies. This course will focus on Business English reading and listening skills to foster students with, a 'frontier spirit', a global perspective, and the ability to contribute to the business world in which English is considered as a language for business communication.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

The aim of this course is to prepare the students for the TOEIC tests in May, and November.
The final goal of this course is English communication skills and knowledge equivalent to a TOEIC score of minimum 500 points.

By the end of this course, the students will demonstrate knowledge of:
1. TOEIC test structure
2. TOEIC relevant vocabulary and grammatical structures
3. TOEIC test strategies
4. Communication strategies in business situations
5. Critical thinking and decision-making skills

TOEIC Skills: Students will learn strategies for taking the TOEIC test.
Speaking: Students will have the opportunity to practice speaking English in class and receive feedback on their progress.
Listening: Students will practice listening to English, particularly in relevance to the listening section fo the TOEIC test.
Reading: Students will complete reading tasks that will prepare them for the reading section of the TOEIC test.
Grammar: Grammar will be taught with a focus on the needs of the students.
Vocabulary: Students will have access to (and be encouraged to study) a comprehensive vocabulary list recommended for achieving a CEFR B1 level at the TOEIC® Listening and Reading score.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

Class Contribution includes homework, class activities, participation and preparation for one case study that will be covered during the term, and weekly vocabulary quizzes.
Quizzes/Tests refer to two mini TOEIC tests which are scheduled to take place on weeks 3 and 6.
Participant-Centered Learning (PCL) will be incorporated.
Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the semester and will be supplemented with individual work.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 

名古屋大学大学院文学研究科人文学専攻博士後期課程にて博士(文学)を取得。愛知淑徳大学文学部助教を経て、現在名古屋商科大学経済学部専任講師。英語学を専門としており、統語論ならびに英語史の研究を行う。

Siyang Xia obtained his Ph.D. in English Linguistics from the Graduate School of Letters, Nagoya University. After working as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Letters, Aichi Shukutoku University, he is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics, Nagoya University of Commerce and Business. He specializes in English Linguistics and conducts research in syntax and historical linguistics.
