This course will focus on Business English reading and listening skills to foster students with, a 'frontier spirit', a global perspective, and the ability to contribute to the business world in which English is considered as a language for business communication.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

To improve students' business English reading and listening skills, this course primarily focuses on the TOEIC test (which is based on Business English). Students will learn the foundation to learn the English language and productive and receptive skills. Students will also learn TOEIC test strategies alongside general English skills; English skills will include speaking, listening, reading, grammar and vocabulary.

The aim of this course is to prepare students for the TOEIC tests in June, September, and December.
The final goal of this course is English communication skills and knowledge equivalent to a TOEIC score of minimum 500 points.

TOEIC Skills: Students will learn strategies for taking the TOEIC test.

Speaking: Students will have the opportunity to practice speaking English in class and receive feedback on their progress.

Listening: Students will practice listening to English, particularly in relevance to the listening section fo the TOEIC test.

Reading: Students will complete reading tasks that will prepare them for the reading section of the TOEIC test.

Grammar: Grammar will be taught with a focus on the needs of the students.

Vocabulary: Students will have access to (and be encouraged to study) a comprehensive vocabulary list recommended for achieving 500 points at the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

This course will be guided by a lecture, which will be supported by independent study completed by the students outside of class.

Participant-Centered Learning (PCL) will be incorporated. The independent study outside of class will help prepare students for task-based application within the class and will include written as well as online homework tasks. This should take at least two hours after class each week.

The instructor will give feedback to in-class activities and tests during class and during office hours upon request.

Students are strongly encouraged to use the resources available in the Information Center when they prepare for and review the content of classes.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Class Contribution includes homework, class activities, and participation and preparation for three case studies that will be covered during the term.
Quizzes/Tests refer to weekly vocabulary quizzes.
Simulation refers to the TOEIC test conducted in December. (Aim score: 500)

  1. Active participation and shared learning is at the core of the case method learning.Participants are asked to limit their use of electronic devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones) during classroom sessions in support of this model. Even with permission granted, devices should only be used in the classroom in service to the case discussion. Online searches and generative AI tools, even if related to the case discussion, are discouraged while class is in session.
  2. Students are prohibited from using the course materials (including cases) distributed by the university for any purpose other than participation in the designated class.Students must not input, process or test course materials with any artificial intelligence (AI) tools, bots, software, or platforms without the author’s permission.
