授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

In recent years, it is said that the presence of Japanese enterprises is decreasing gradually. Still, there are many things to learn from strategies of Japanese enterprises. In particular, many suggestions can be obtained from global business strategies of Japanese companies. The main purpose of this course is to understand how Japanese companies have built and implemented global strategies through the 100% case method discussions with classmates.

Students could face the 6 cases of Japanese enterprises in the course. Specifically, Toyota, Komatsu, Shiseido, Rakuten, UNIQLO(Fast retailing), and Kyocera(Kazuo Inamori). As you know, every enterprise is so-called a representative company in Japan and intentionally working on global strategies. Although we deal only with Japanese companies in the course, we focus on diversity for these types of business. In addition, all cases are delivered from Harvard Business School.

The course consists of three parts. Firstly as Season A, students will work on the history of the 6 enterprises and comparison with the industries of their home countries. Secondly as Season B, they will be tackling to analyze 6 cases. Finally at the Season C, they will think about ideas to create new startup business plan in Japan in their respective industries. Consequently, students will be able to develop their knowledge level step by step.

Shall we study about global business strategy of Japanese enterprises and discuss new business idea for doing business in Japan! Please enjoy study and have fun!

As per participants centered learning, classes are delivered on 100% case methods and active learning style. Please be advised that students participate in each class session actively. e.g. raising your hands voluntarily and mentioning your opinions logically. In addition, there are many opportunities to make presentation about company profiles and industry comparison including 6 cases. Students are highly recommended to well prepare making presentation to answer case questions successfully. Finally, students are expected to create new startup business idea based on each enterprise and/or industry.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

All students are required to read each case and make written pre-assignments for at least 2 hours to prepare class session. Pre-assignment must be submitted before starting class. Late submission will be deducted.

Practicing for the individual presentation is essential for achieving good performance. So students had better practice the presentation before class sessions at on and off campus e.g.Information Center (Library). Students are required to submit presentation slides before the class of their session on a data base. Late submission will be deducted.

The results of each presentation (e.g. ranking) could be disclosed during class. Accordingly, students will be able to get the information about interim results of their score.

Note: This course will proceed with active learning with 100% case method. It is not a general lecture style. There is no lecture from the professor. In the class, students are required to have sufficient preparatory assignments, presentations and discussions, and the grade is determined by the degree of contribution to the class. Above all, active participation attitude is essential.
In addition, it is forbidden to use smartphones and PCs without permission in class. If you do not follow this, you will not be allowed to attend the following weeks.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

The detail of grading methods and points distribution is as follows,

①Class participation 30%(10x3)

②Pre-assignments before the class 25% (5x5)

③Case individual Presentation 20%

④Individual startup plan 25%

①②and ③are assessed by lecturer, ④is assessed by students/audiences

Final grade are figured out by accumulating ①,②,③and ④. Students needs to get more than 60%. Please be advised that all students are not allowed to skip ③and/or④, no matter what your total % is.
