授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

Entrepreneurship has a growing important role in creating innovation, job employment and economic impact to the society. However, the two research questions of “what is entrepreneurship” and “who is the entrepreneur” requires fundamental understanding of their differences and correlation. Thus, the course aims to impart students with concept and application of the knowledge about the challenges faced by entrepreneur, and the creation of their business plan and ventures.

(I)Course approach
•The lesson with be conducted primarily in English.
•Every lesson will be divided into two parts.
Part I: Lecture format to learn about the concept
Part 2: Practice format with discussion based on case study or presentation of business
plan
•Some lessons will be conducted using research case study with online communicating online by external guest speakers, such as incumbent entrepreneur or gestation ventures in Japan or Overseas.


(II) Course Work
-Group work for mid-term and final presentation and report of “Business and Gestation (B&G) Plan”
-Evaluation and feedback on mid-term and final presentation and report will
be provided by the faculty member, as well as external invited researchers and
practitioners

(III) Targeted Student:
•interested in creating business plan as a international team
•interested to acquire deeper knowledge and competencies in entrepreneurship
•interested in team project, as well as individual work

Week 1: Introduction of Entrepreneurship
To understand the basic of entrepreneurship through hands on business idea creation activity

Week 2: The Power of Entrepreneurship
To understand the entrepreneurship revolution in US.
To understand the university based entrepreneurship ecosystem

Week 3: Opportunity Recognition, Shaping, and Reshaping
To understand about idea creation, opportunity creation, by considering customer, competition, suppliers, government and other stakeholders

Week 4: Resource and network
To understand 3 factors of success :Entrepreneur, Resource, Network

Week 5: Innovation and Cultural Diversity (I) -Pre-gestation phase
To understand about concept of Cultural Synergy:
how to learn from cultural conflicts and action Planfor your team members

Week 6: Building the Founding Team
To understand about the importance of team formation, roles of member, and methods to form a strong team

Week 7: Resources for Opportunity
To understand how to configure resource with the opportunity

Week 8: Business Plan Contest (Mid Term)
To receive validation and feedback on business plan

Week 9: Venture Gestation
To understand the concept of venture gestation and factors that lead to cessation of gestation

Week 10: Cultural Diversity (I) -Post-gestation phase
To identify actual gestation conflicts and action taken.
To induce learning based on concept of cultural synergy

Week 11: Gestation beyond Gestation
To understand mindset and decision making to take over a venture to grow existing venture (perspective of foreigner entrepreneur in Japan)

Week 12: Rehearsal To prepare for the final presentation

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Dr Goi is a professor in the Faculty of Management at NUCB Business School. He received his PhD in Media and Governance from Keio University and MBA at Waseda University in Japan. His research and teaching fields include Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Development. Dr Goi has rich experience in management research about student-based venture creation in Japan and the ASEAN region. His publication titled “Dynamic Capability for the Success of Student-Based Gestation Ventures” was awarded the Best Journal Paper Award at the 12th Association for Policy Informatics Conference held in Japan in 2016. In recent years, Goi Hoe Chin employed collaborative and remote based design thinking methods to create solutions for regional towns in Chiba, Kanagawa, Aichi and Gifu prefectures in Japan. His corporate partners include Toyota Corporation, Ricoh Corporation, Tokyu Land Corporation, Ena Kawakamiya, Showa Lifestyle Museum etc. The design thinking project with Toyota Corporation was chosen as a “Best Partnership Award” (Finalist) at AMBA & BGA’s Excellence Awards in 2021.

(実務経験 Work experience)


Prior to his academic and research work, Dr has possessed diverse working experienced in private, government and non profit sector in Singapore for more than 10 years. He has served as a manager in several regional Community Development Councils (government) in Singapore for about 10 years. He has contributed to the development and implementation of regional policies, and organised community and welfare projects that created social impact on the local community.

In addition, Dr has also acted at the Assistant Director in National Volunteerism and Philanthropy Centre to develop partnership development and consultation on corporate social responsibility (CSR) program for several corporation, such as, Avanade (Asia) and DHL (Singapore).
