授業の概要 Course Overview

This course aims to provide students deeper knowledge of English and Japanese. Students are expected to understand not only the underlying rules of language but also the society and culture that affect languages, and thereby acquire abilities needed for a global leader.
This course will overview English linguistics, focusing on syntax, semantics, and pragmatics We will see (i) how the rules are derived from examples and how the rules can explain other examples, and (ii) how the similarities and differences between English and Japanese can be explained upon those rules.
This course provides students not only knowledge of English linguistics but also opportunities to get familiarized with the methods used in linguistic research. In order to gain credit, based on NUCB Diploma Policy, students are thus expected to learn actively by studying inside and outside class and try their best to use the knowledge in class activities. Since the content of each class is based on the content of previous classes, reviewing what they have learned after class and preparing their homework are essential for succeeding in this course.
After students have completed this course, they are expected to gain knowledge on English syntax (how words combine and make a sentence), language acquisition (how children acquire linguistic knowledge), and the history of English. They should further be able to explain how English and Japanese are the same/different in terms of syntax and language acquisition.

Group activities will be assigned for each session. Students are expected to first think individually about the assignments, and then discuss in pairs or groups to reach a conclusion. The activities do not necessarily have an absolute “correct” answer; students are expected to practice and acquire the way to (i) form a hypothesis from a set of linguistic data and (ii) see whether other data can be explained by the hypothesis. Students are also expected to present their ideas to others during class.

授業調査に対するコメント Comment on Course Evaluation

I will explain syntax in more detail, since students commented last year that the area was difficult to understand.
