授業の概要 Course Overview

Misson Statementとの関係性 / Connection to our Mission Statement

At the core of our phonetics course is a commitment to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of the intricate sounds that form the basis of human language. Our mission is to equip students with the foundational knowledge and analytical skills necessary to explore the diverse array of speech sounds, their production mechanisms, and their roles in communication. Through engaging instruction, interactive learning experiences, and practical applications, we aim to empower students to unravel the mysteries of phonetics, navigate the complexities of linguistic sound systems, and apply their expertise in various fields ranging from linguistics to speech therapy. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate a community of critical thinkers and lifelong learners who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the study and advancement of phonetics in our global society.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

A phonetics course holds paramount importance in English linguistics as it serves as the cornerstone for comprehending the intricacies of speech sounds and their role in language structure and communication. By delving into the articulatory mechanisms and acoustic properties of English sounds, students gain essential skills for analyzing phonological patterns, understanding dialectal variations, and honing their communication abilities. Furthermore, phonetics is indispensable for diagnosing and addressing speech disorders, exploring the developmental stages of language acquisition, and advancing technologies such as speech recognition. In essence, a thorough understanding of phonetics lays the groundwork for a deeper appreciation and exploration of English linguistics, empowering students to navigate the rich tapestry of the English language with precision and insight.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor

Alexander Kilpatrick is an assistant professor at the Nagoya University of Business and Commerce. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne. Alexander's main area of research involves examining the influence of transitional probability on non-native speech perception. More specifically, it focuses on the chance of sounds co-occurring in a language and makes predictions as to how listeners will misperceive non-native speech based on that chance.

He is available to meet with students on Wednesdays 11:20 - 12:50 in room 6306.

His areas of interest include Speech perception, Iconicity, Psycholinguistics, Neurolinguistics, Transitional Probability, Phonetics, and Phonology.
