In line with NUCB's mission statement, this course aims to educate and inspire students to become innovative and ethical leaders through the medium of English. They are expected to grasp and take on the ideal of “Frontier Spirit” and improve their ability to create knowledge in English for the advancement of business and society.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

The course will provide students with the foundation to complete receptive and productive English language tasks linked to the CEFR B2 level. It has a special focus on vocabulary and grammar learned inductively and deductively through reading, writing, listening, and speaking tasks embedded within a progressive complexity of information, materials and tasks presented. Across the term, language is recycled via engaging active learning tasks that make use of individual, pair, group and technological formats to enhance the chances of acquisition. Homework and individual study components via online learning are also integrated throughout the course.

到達目標 / Achievement Goal


Building on the English Fundamentals 500 courses, this course will further strengthen students' four English language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, in order to prepare them in their pursuit of graduation and post-graduation goals, including job searching, job application and /or further academic study.

*This is a SAC compulsory course. For SAC compulsory classes, students are required to study over 20 hours during the semester at SAC in the Central Information Center.

Upon successful completion of this course, students can expect to
- Understand a wide range of intermediate-level English grammar constructions
- Be able to produce statements and questions at the CEFR B2 level
- Have broadened vocabulary knowledge through review and recycling via receptive and productive tasks
- Improve reading fluency using critical reading strategies such as skimming and scanning
- Learn and use critical listening strategies to identify key themes as well as search for and recognize information in audio or video samples
- Discuss topics using open and closed practice to accurately describe/explain business-related actions and events
- Produce effective business communication in a variety of writing styles
- Take part in case study discussion using intermediate English communication skills

This learner-centered course will be guided by an instruction in the form of grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading input (supported by individual study completed by the students) as well as speaking and writing practice in equal components. Individual study will include work from online course materials. Group and peer interaction will occur regularly throughout the term, and will be supplemented with individual work.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Preparation Report = SAC-related work = 10%
Class Contribution = Active participation in the class through speaking and writing in English = 15%
Quizzes/Tests = Take-home assignments & In-class presentations (15%) + TOEIC (10%) = 25%
Case Exam = Case preparation & Case discussion = 15%
Final Exam = 35%

【IMPORTANT NOTICE】
Students enrolled in SAC compulsory courses are all required to take the TOEIC exam 3 times at NUCB during the spring semester (June) and fall semester (October and November). Failing to do so, a student will receive Incomplete for his/her grade for the SAC compulsory course in the semester in which the student failed to take the TOEIC exam.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Fei Chen is an assistant professor at Nagoya University of Business and Commerce. He holds a BA in English (China University of Political Science and Law), a MSc in Modern Japanese Studies (University of Oxford), and a Ph.D in Interdisciplinary Information Studies (University of Tokyo). He is interested in transnational history, particularly the history of cultural exchange between Japan and China. He co-edited Alternative Representations of the Past: The Politics of History in Modern China (2020) and published his research in peer-reviewed journals like Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Modern Chinese History, International Journal of Asian Studies, Journal of Asian History, and Asian Studies Review.

(実務経験 Work experience)


Before coming to Nagoya, Fei Chen taught at Shanghai Normal University and was a visiting scholar at Harvard-Yenching Institute and University of Tokyo.
