In line with NUCB's mission statement, this English language course aims to educate and inspire students to become innovative and ethical leaders through the medium of English. In so doing, it is hoped they can grasp and take on the ideal of ʻFrontier Spiritʼ and the ability to create knowledge in English for the advancement of business and society.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

This course will provide students with the foundation to learn the English language and productive and respective skills in preparation to achieve the CEFR B1level at the TOEIC® Listening and Reading score (550-780 score range).

到達目標 / Achievement Goal


This course focuses on understanding grammar and making use of the knowledge through reading, listening, speaking, and communication tasks assuming various business situations. Across the classes, assignments and tasks typical to the junior high school and senior high school English classrooms are repeated and presented in individual and pair work formats. Homework and individual study components for active learning through online modules are also woven throughout the course.
* This is a SAC compulsory subject.

This course will be guided by a lecture, which will be supported by independent study completed by the students outside of class. The independent study outside of class will include written as well as online homework tasks. Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the semester, and will be supplemented within individual work.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Preparation Report - Weekly SAC activities
Final report = June TOEIC test
For SAC compulsory classes, students are required to study over 20 hours during the semester at SAC in the Central Information Center. Additionally, students enrolled in SAC compulsory courses are required to take the TOEIC exam 3 times at NUCB during the spring semester (June) and fall semester (October and November). Failing to do so, a student will receive incomplete for his/her grade for the SAC compulsory course in the semester in which the student failed to take the TOEIC exam.
Students' progress will be evaluated weekly.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 

学位:博士(人間・環境学)京都大学
   修士 ( MA in TESOL/ Applied Linguistics ) Teachers College Columbia University, Japan

Noriko Kurihara has many years of English teaching experience at both secondary school and at higher education institutions such as Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University, Nara Women’s University, Okayama University and Kurashiki City College. Her research interests include learner autonomy, critical thinking, and sociolinguistics. Her main focus has been on process-oriented writing and the impact of peer review on the development of student writing skills. She has given numerous academic presentations for professional organizations such as JALT, JACET, TESOL, IATEFL and AILA, and her research has appeared in international publications such as TESOL Journal and the Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics. She has also been active in international youth exchange programs and occasionally edits and reviews articles for peer-reviewed journals.
