The course will equip the students with essential English communication skills and global competences as stated in the mission of the university, such as "frontier spirit" and professional abilities necessary to bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world.
授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course
Through this course, students will develop productive and receptive skills in preparation to achieve the CEFR B1 level at the TOEIC® Listening and Reading score (550-780 score range). Across the classes, assignments and tasks typical to the junior high school and senior high school English classrooms are repeated and presented in individual, pair work or group work formats. Homework and individual study components for active learning through online modules (Google Classroom) are also woven throughout the course.

Students will be expected to build up English vocabulary, understand grammar and make use of the knowledge through reading, listening, speaking, and communication tasks assuming various business situations.

This course will be guided by a lecture, which will be supported by independent study completed by the students outside of class. The independent study outside of class will include written as well as online homework tasks. Group and peer interaction will occur throughout the semester, and will be supplemented within individual work.

Quizzes / Tests = in-class tests (15%) + TOEIC test (15%) = 30%
For SAC compulsory classes, students are required to study over 20 hours during the semester at SAC in the Central Information Center.
Additionally, students enrolled in SAC Compulsory courses are all required to take the TOEIC exam 2 times at NUCB during the spring semester (May) and fall semester (November). Failing to do so, a student will receive Incomplete for his/her grade for the SAC compulsory course in the semester in which the student failed to take the TOEIC exam.
Weekly in-class tests and score from the TOEIC test in November represent 30% of the final grade. The final exam will represent 30% of the final grade, and 20% will come from class contribution.

Prof. Nae's courses receive highly positive evaluations from students, thanks to her attention to students' needs, rigorous practice, and the relaxed, inclusive atmosphere she fosters in class.
担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor
Prof. Nae holds an MA in translation and a PhD with a dissertation in linguistics from Nagoya University. She has been teaching English to students of all ages and levels for over two decades. Besides an extensive teaching experience, Prof. Nae has been actively involved in research and translation/interpretation work. Her research interests are translation studies, internationalization in higher education, gender studies, and active learning in Japanese clasrooms.
