授業の概要 Course Overview

This course will help students to learn the English language using both productive and receptive skills. Lessons will also include a TOEIC component to help students prepare for the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test, achieving a CEFR B1 level score (550-780 score range.)

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

This course focuses on understanding and using vocabulary, reviewing grammar, and practical exercises that help students develop their knowledge of reading, listening, and speaking. Students will also practice language through communication tasks based on various business situations.

到達目標 / Achievement Goal


Assignments and tasks will focus on language use similar to the junior high school and senior high school English classrooms that are repeated and presented in individual and pair work formats. Homework and individual study components provide students with active learning opportunities using through online modules throughout the course.

Term 4 also presents a Case Study component, in conjunction with SAC. The case based English course is organized to help students successfully develop their analytical and critical thinking skills about a topical case. Students will prepare for a Case Study discussion using a relevant case from the chosen textbook. SAC is a compulsory component in this course.

Grammar: to present the grammar as outlined in the textbook units, to review the grammar points learnt from high school lessons, to use the grammar of each week in a practical activity (e.g., statements and questions).

Reading: to improve reading fluency and confidence, to learn and use reading strategies (e.g., skimming and scanning), to expand vocabulary.

Listening: to improve listening confidence, to learn and use listening strategies (e.g., listen for main details, listen for key words), to search for and identify information about people, places, and events from an audio sample

Speaking & Communication: to discuss topics using practiced and spontaneous speech, to accurately describe people places and things, to be able to ask and respond to questions about one's own and someone else’s daily life.

Case Study: Students should be able to understand and explain a case study related to business issues faced by different organizations, use reading and critical thinking skills to critique and discuss specific business issues faced by different organizations, suggest possible solutions to tackle specific business issues presented in the case, present opinions and suggest an approach relating to a chosen case in a written report.

This course will be guided by a lecture. Students will be supported by pair work and group work in class and independent study will be completed by the students outside of class.

The independent study component outside of class will help students by practising for task-based activities in class and will include written and online homework tasks.

授業調査に対するコメント Comment on Course Evaluation

Students' progress will be evaluated weekly.

For SAC compulsory classes, students are required to study over 20 hours during the semester at SAC in the Central Information Center. Additionally, students enrolled in SAC Compulsory courses are all required to take the TOEIC exam 3 times at NUCB during the spring semester (June) and fall semester (September and December). Failing to do so, a student will receive Incomplete for his/her grade for the SAC compulsory course in the semester in which the student failed to take the TOEIC exam.
