In this course, students will practice and refine advanced English language skills, which will empower them to realize their full potential in a global society.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

Advanced English 800 is the highest-level language course designed to equip students for the challenges of global communication and academic excellence. Building upon the foundations of prior core courses, it aims to reinforce students' language skills while introducing new, targeted strategies to enhance reading proficiency and speech intelligibility. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions with the instructor and fellow classmates, providing a practical platform to apply and reinforce the new skills acquired.

到達目標 / Achievement Goal


Upon completion of this course, students will be prepared to excel on the TOEIC, achieving proficiency at the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) C1 or C2 level (corresponding to a score of 800 or above on the TOEIC).

N.B.
This is a SAC-compulsory course.

This course will include guided lectures and independent study. Students are encouraged to dedicate approximately 2 hours per week to preview upcoming materials and an additional 2 hours for reviewing course content. Supplementary materials are available at the Central Information Center.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Additionally, students enrolled in SAC compulsory courses are all required to take the TOEIC exam twice at NUCB: Once during the spring semester (May) and once during the fall semester (November). Failing to do so, a student will receive Incomplete for his/her grade for the SAC compulsory course in the semester in which the student failed to take the TOEIC exam.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Sugene Kim is an associate professor of English at Nagoya University of Commerce & Business. (The correct pronunciation of "Sugene" is "スウジン.") She holds a master’s degree in professional English writing and a doctorate in applied linguistics from Ewha Womans University. Her research focuses on academic writing, second language (L2) acquisition, and morphosyntax within the framework of pedagogical grammar. She is particularly interested in examining the cognitive and linguistic strategies utilized by adult L2 learners to address writing difficulties in different rhetorical contexts. Her related research interests include sociolinguistic variation and World Englishes.
