This course aligns with NUCB's mission statement to educate innovative and ethical leaders who possess a “Frontier Spirit” and to create knowledge that advances business and society. In this course, students will practice and refine advanced English language skills. They will learn to express their original, critical ideas about global issues and business topics and build confidence in their ability to bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

Building on previous core courses (500/600/700), this course aims to further strengthen students' four English language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, in order to prepare them in their pursuit of graduation and post-graduation goals, including job searching, job application and /or further academic study.

到達目標 / Achievement Goal

This course will help students review vocabulary and grammar learnt from previous core courses (500/600/700) and practice using new vocabulary and grammar learned in each class through various kinds of in-classroom activities and take-home assignments. It aims to help students acquire:
-advanced reading strategies to improve reading fluency and accuracy
-advanced listening strategies to identify key facts in audio or video samples
-advanced speaking strategies to effectively communicate complex ideas, and to ask and respond to original questions
-advanced writing strategies to compose complex sentences and paragraphs

This learner-centered course will be guided by an instruction in the form of grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading input (supported by individual study completed by the students) as well as speaking and writing practice in equal components. Individual study will include work from online course materials. Group and peer interaction will occur regularly throughout the term, and will be supplemented with individual work.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Preparation Report = SAC-related work = 10%
Class Contribution = Active participation in the class through speaking and writing in English = 15%
Quizzes/Tests = Take-home assignments & In-class presentations (15%) + TOEIC (10%) = 25%
Case Exam = Case preparation & Case discussion = 15%
Final Exam = 35%

Students enrolled in SAC compulsory courses are all required to take the TOEIC exam 3 times at NUCB during the spring semester (June) and fall semester (October and November). Failing to do so, a student will receive Incomplete for his/her grade for the SAC compulsory course in the semester in which the student failed to take the TOEIC exam.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 

Fei Chen is an assistant professor at Nagoya University of Business and Commerce. He holds a BA in English (China University of Political Science and Law), a MSc in Modern Japanese Studies (University of Oxford), and a Ph.D in Interdisciplinary Information Studies (University of Tokyo). He is interested in transnational history, particularly the history of cultural exchange between Japan and China. He co-edited Alternative Representations of the Past: The Politics of History in Modern China (2020) and published his research in peer-reviewed journals like Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Modern Chinese History, International Journal of Asian Studies, Journal of Asian History, and Asian Studies Review.

(実務経験 Work experience)

Before coming to Nagoya, Fei Chen taught at Shanghai Normal University and was a visiting scholar at Harvard-Yenching Institute and University of Tokyo.
