授業の概要 Course Overview

This course directly aligns with NUCB's mission statement to “educate innovative and ethical leaders who possess a ‘Frontier Spiritʼ and to create knowledge that advances business and society." In this course, students will practice and refine advanced English language skills. They will contribute original, critical argumentation about global issues and business topics, building confidence in their ability to "bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world.”

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

ENGLISH FUNDAMENTALS 800 is the final course in the FUNDAMENTALS sequence. In the second half of this advanced course, students will continue to:

-Deepen their understanding of advanced-level English grammar and vocabulary
-Read complex texts and increase reading fluency
-Enhance their ability to express themselves using both written and spoken English
-Make use of their English language knowledge through reading, listening, speaking, and performing communication tasks assuming various high-level business situations
-Give a number of original, persuasive presentations

The aim of ADVANCED ENGLISH 800 is to:

-Provide students with the opportunity to obtain advanced-level knowledge of the English language through the completion of productive and receptive tasks that contain material at the CEFR C1 & C2 and TOEIC® 800 levels score range

PLEASE NOTE: This is a SAC compulsory subject.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will improved the following skills:

1. Grammar: to review the grammar learnt from previous ENGLISH FUNDAMENTALS courses and to use the grammar of each week in class activities and presentations

2. Reading: to improve reading fluency and to learn and use advanced critical reading strategies

3. Listening: to learn and use critical listening strategies to identify key facts, to search for and recognize information about people, places, things and events from an audio sample, and to take strong notes

4. Speaking & Communication: to discuss topics using spontaneous and practiced speech, to accurately communicate complex ideas in front of an academic audience, to ask and respond to original questions

5. Writing: to learn about various business writing styles and formats, to use advanced grammar knowledge to compose complex sentences and compositions

This course will be taught using lectures, small and large group discussion, and presentations.

Participant-Centered Learning (PCL) will be incorporated. The independent study outside of class will help prepare students for task-based application within class and will include written as well as online homework tasks.

Students should be prepared to spend approximately 1-2 hours preparing and completing homework BEFORE each weekly class meeting.

It is encouraged that students utilize the Central Information Center (library).

To be successful in class, students must complete the required weekly assignments, come to class prepared, and be ACTIVE participants in class.

The teacher will provide oral and written feedback on all assignments, either online (Google classroom) or in class.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Preparation Report = Weekly SAC Activities

Final Report = June TOEIC Test

For SAC compulsory classes, students are required to study over 20 hours during the semester at SAC in the Central Information Center. Additionally, students enrolled in SAC Compulsory courses are all required to take the TOEIC exam 3 times at NUCB during the spring semester (June) and fall semester (September and December). Failing to do so, a student will receive Incomplete for his/her grade for the SAC compulsory course in the semester in which the student failed to take the TOEIC exam.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Myeongeun Son is an assistant professor in the faculty of International Studies at NUCB. Before joining NUCB, she taught Second Language Learning, Pedagogical Grammar, American Language and Culture, and English to undergraduate as well as secondary school students. Her research interests lie in development of Second Language (L2), L2 processing, and Second Language Acquisition (SLA). She has mainly investigated how L2 learners process and produce L2 and the extent to which their L2 processing and production are linked to their L1 ones. In addition, she has also conducted research on L2 learners' attention and socialization. Her research has appeared in journals, such as Applied Psycholinguistics.
