授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

By taking part in this course, participants will deepen their understanding of possible ethical issues embedded in business decisions. They can then make an ethically-sound judgement on what or what not to pursue by considering the impacts on different stakeholder groups involved in the business in general and the decision to be made in specific.

By taking part in this course, participants will be able to recognize moral issues in business decisions, analyze the benefits and harms brought by business decisions on different stakeholder groups, and devise strategies to respond to ethical dilemmas in businesses as well as measures to prevent unethical actions and behaviors from happening.

Participants should allow at least 3 hours of preparation time per case.
A laptop computer is required for electronic distribution of handouts on the day of the class.


Cases : (1) BP and the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & (2) Unauthorized Disclosure: Hewlett-Packard’s Secret Surveillance of Directors & (3) FIFA: The Beautiful Game and Global Scandal
Assignment : Please identify and discuss the common driver(s) of corporate scandals/unethical behaviors found across all three cases.
Deadline : Before the class begins on Day 1.
Submission method : Please submit to Google Classroom.
Feedback: The common driver(s) will be discussed in class.


Case : Through the Eyes of a Whistle-Blower: How Sherry Hunt Spoke Up About Citibank’s Mortgage Fraud
Assignment : Examination questions will be distributed in class (Day 4).
Deadline : The in-class case examination will last for 3 hours.
Submission method : Please submit to Google Classroom.
Feedback: Marked assessment rubrics will be returned to participants.

評価の留意事項 Notes on Evaluation Criteria

Preparation before class and active participation in both small group discussion and open class discussion are expected. The preparation report and the case examination will be graded by the comprehensiveness and depth of arguments. The final course grading will follow a forced distributed curve when the number of participations is larger than 10.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Dr. Law is an Associate Professor in the area of management at NUCB Business School. He gained his PhD from City University of Hong Kong. His primary research interests include knowledge management and human resource management. His work has appeared in renowned international journals such as European Management Journal, Human Resource Management Review, and Journal of Knowledge Management. Two of his research work won best-paper and research awards in 2013 and 2016 respectively. At his current university, Dr. Law received Teaching Awards for the academic years 2020/21 (Outstanding), 2021/22, and 2022/23 as well as Research Award for the academic year 2020/21.

(実務経験 Work experience)


Prior to joining NUCB, Dr Law worked at the Open University of Hong Kong, where he started his academic career and rose quickly from Assistant Lecturer to Lecturer to Assistant Professor during his nine years of tenure. He has extensive experiences in delivering business management courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as supervising research and dissertations.
