Mission Statement of NUCB Business School:
Our mission is to educate innovative and ethical leaders who possess a 'Frontier Spirit' and to create knowledge that advances business and society. Our students will have the ability to bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world.
The course would enable students to learn about concept of sustainability using case discussion and put into practice by the end of the course as an evident of "frontier spirit" . Through the active participation by members with diversity, it would enable every individual to gain the ability of understand the differences, and to seek insights and opportunities in the sustainable future cities.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course
The 2030 agenda for sustainable development by the United Nations (UN) includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goals require immediate actions by developed and developing nations to tackle challenges and foster sustainable growth. They recognize issues from climate change to environmental protection, global poverty to inequality and improvements in health and education to economic growth.
The SDGs can be divided into Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) areas to measure the impact of actions by corporate entities as corporations are working with governments to tackle these global challenges.
The course is based on academia and industry connections to provide students an opportunity to interact with stakeholders and use their skills to solve issues faced by global corporations while tackling issues related to environment and sustainability.

Course Approach
The SDGs course is based on interactions with a corporate entity (eg Yamaha Corporation) while focusing on a specific SDGs goal and its stakeholders.
Students will interact with Company representatives and project stakeholders.
– Interpretation in English will be provided for the Japanese presentations and discussions.
Readings (cases or discussion material) will be assigned, provided beforehand for specific sessions. The emphasis will be on student responsibility for learning through active application of course content, interaction with stakeholders, and team collaborations for the final report. Active participation and preparation for class are requirements for this course.
Submission method
Please submit all required reports using “Google Classroom” before the deadline. Late submission of the assigned work shall lead automatically to the imposition of a penalty.
Final Exam. There is “No Final Exam” in the course.
Use of Electronic Devices
The use of electronic equipment including phone, tablet, smartwatch, and other communication devices for purposes other than course-related learning are strictly prohibited during class.
Google Classroom
The reports, slides, submission deadlines and other important information related to class activities will be distributed through Google Classroom and students are expected to check it frequently.
Academic Honesty and Integrity
Academic honesty is crucial for the learning process. Plagiarism or academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor
Dr Goi is a professor in the Faculty of Management at NUCB Business School. He received his PhD in Media and Governance from Keio University and MBA at Waseda University in Japan. His research and teaching fields include Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Development. Dr Goi has rich experience in management research about student-based venture creation in Japan and the ASEAN region. His publication titled “Dynamic Capability for the Success of Student-Based Gestation Ventures” was awarded the Best Journal Paper Award at the 12th Association for Policy Informatics Conference held in Japan in 2016. In recent years, Goi Hoe Chin employed collaborative and remote based design thinking methods to create solutions for regional towns in Chiba, Kanagawa, Aichi and Gifu prefectures in Japan. His corporate partners include Toyota Corporation, Ricoh Corporation, Tokyu Land Corporation, Ena Kawakamiya, Showa Lifestyle Museum etc. The design thinking project with Toyota Corporation was chosen as a “Best Partnership Award” (Finalist) at AMBA & BGA’s Excellence Awards in 2021.
(実務経験 Work experience)
Prior to his academic and research work, Dr has possessed diverse working experienced in private, government and non profit sector in Singapore for more than 10 years. He has served as a manager in several regional Community Development Councils (government) in Singapore for about 10 years. He has contributed to the development and implementation of regional policies, and organised community and welfare projects that created social impact on the local community.
In addition, Dr has also acted at the Assistant Director in National Volunteerism and Philanthropy Centre to develop partnership development and consultation on corporate social responsibility (CSR) program for several corporation, such as, Avanade (Asia) and DHL (Singapore).
