This Cross Cultural Management course supports the School's mission to educate innovative and ethical leaders who are keen to develop cross cultural management competencies and communication skills in multicultural business contexts.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

The increasing international nature of today’s business landscape forces us to consider that the ENTIRE WORLD is our marketplace. Individual or organisational success is no longer dependent solely on business acumen, but rather what is MORE IMPORTANT than ever is our ability to understand, communicate and work with people in different countries and cultures as more companies rely on their global reach to stay competitive. Given this, it is an absolute necessity for the success of global leaders to build cross-cultural competencies to be able to manage in multiple and diverse business contexts.

This course is designed to provide participants with a practical and an experiential forum for developing cross-cultural competencies necessary for international managers. This course exposes participants to critical issues of managing diversity in the context of understanding international business.
The following are questions to consider:
• What is global leadership?
• What is the cornerstone of global leadership? Cross Cultural Management
• How do I develop a global mindset?
• What are the common challenges and pitfalls faced by global managers?
• What are the PRACTICAL skills necessary for managing or working globally?
• How can you adjust your DOMINANT CULTURAL style to INTERACT WELL across cultures?

The coursework includes role-plays and self-evaluation as well as case studies. The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the issues involved in cross-cultural management, including the impact of culture at the level of the individual, the team and the organisation. You should be able to improve your own cross-cultural sensitivity and professional communication skills. Feedback on individual components will be given in summary form for all students. Group projects will also receive feedback.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Anthony Townley completed his Master (MA) and Doctoral (PhD) degrees in Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia). Anthony previously completed a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia) and a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Asian Studies (BA) at Griffith University (Brisbane, Australia).

Anthony has accumulated 25 years of varied professional work experience, most recently as the Director of Academic Writing at at Koç University in Istanbul. He has also worked as a commercial lawyer in Sydney and as an English language instructor, in a variety of teaching and administrative roles in Australia, Turkey and Japan. His special teaching areas include: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Academic Writing, Legal Writing and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and he is currently undertaking sociolinguistic research of legal/business discourse practices in Japan.
