授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

Course overview and learning value proposition -

All NUCB graduate school (GS) students in the Global Leader Program are required to submit a business case with insight note, which is a part of the requirement to acquire the MBA degree. The goal of this Case Writing course is to help them successfully satisfy this requirement.

This will be a second term follow-on course for some students (those graduating in September 2020), although many students will be joining new in April 2020. The course is still focused around a step-by-step process of giving the course participants the understandings and skill required to complete this written requirement. The course will be less structured than typical MBA/GLP classes and will give the students a lot of opportunities to ask questions and get a lot of individual feedback on their written outputs. 


The course will begin with gaining an understanding (or reminder) of what makes a good (and bad) case study (just a reminder for those starting their second term in case writing), and skill building to write a case study. The course then moves to selecting a topic to focus the case study on and building up the framework required for the case, plus developing the insight note on that case study - The "Insight note" is an explanation of the case study from the point-of-view of teaching the case and considers the various issues and outcomes and how the case study can add focused value to management learning (it is like a consulting note on a business issue)

During the term, classes are held mostly once every two weeks (Tuesdays) starting October 1, and each student will (generally) make a presentation related to their case writing progress in every class, starting in Day 1 – When participants will be required to outline/present the case topic that they are focusing on and explain all related information about that. But the actual in class activities/homework assignments will depend on whether students are graduating in September 2020 or later. It means that there will be a two-track schedule inside the class.

But this two-track learning process is really helpful as those just starting in April 2020 can learn a lot from the others that have already been through one term of the case writing process. On the other hand, those graduating in September 2020 can get some great "fresh" feedback on their case projects from those just joining the course in April 2020. It's "win-win" definitely!

Overall, It is a really fun and a very personal management course, and you will learn a lot about many useful things:
-how to analyse a business case study from different viewpoints and priorities
-how to decide what a case should be focused on for a clear learning value
-how to do a good business analysis of the key management issues
-how to use the correct management frameworks in business
-how to write effectively in business and focus on the audience need
-how to persuasively present and develop your business ideas/analyses

And these things will also greatly support your careers in the real world of business after graduation.

Capstone course to display overall GLP graduate business school learning -

This is a required "capstone course" for the GLP program and is intended to display not just learnings from this required course, but to demonstrate the level of learning acquired during the GLP study period. It doesn't mean that students need to be top level in the subjects they studied, but it requires a certain level of competence synergistically and laterally over various business disciplines. Basically, a high level generally of academic competency in business school learning is required to display professional skill development and global leadership capability acquired.

Of course, the case and insight note project itself requires good communication competence in business English, especially written and analytical writing. But it also requires much more in the sense that NUCB GLP graduates are expected to be able to contribute much to the global business situations that they will be in after completing the NUCB business school program. This is the essence of the "Pass/Fail" holistic grading system for the course, but (for those graduating in September 2020) the specific output grade is graded on motivation, and academic quality of the final written outputs (Case Study and Insight Note).

No case reports or final exam are required.

Case Study/Insight Note project –

Instead, the course all require an ongoing "case study and insight note project". 
These items will be gradually built up and expanded class-by-class, and progress reports will be filed. 
Therefore, written work will be required to be outputted/upgraded for every class. 

The final/completed case study and insight note will be the final written output for the course. 

But there will "mini individual outputs" throughout the course and group work on cases/related projects

Case/Insight Note presentation –
Shortly after the final Day 7 class (July 14), all September 2020 graduating students will be required to make a presentation about their case/insight note (February 2021 for those expecting to graduate in March 2021).

GRADING CRITERIA -

The course will have two different grades:
One grade will be for the course overall, which will be based on either "Pass/Fail" 

One for the Case study/Insight Note, which will be "A/B/C/D/F" or incomplete 


1. GRADE 1: Overall Course Learning/Outcomes 


This will be Pass/Fail and will be assessed on various holistic categories from academic contribution/outcomes general to motivation and class participation/etc.


2. GRADE 2: Evaluation of Case/Insight Note

Case Study/Insight Note "Evaluation Criteria" *May be updated/changed later –


CASE STUDY:

1. The value and purpose of the case is clear

2. The material draws of multiple sources of information

3. The position of the key decision­maker is clear

INSIGHT NOTE

4. The underlying theory is properly referenced.

5. References are accurately recorded and included with the note


6. The note is original work with a unique perspective

Each of the above six categories case/insight note categories will receive a maximum of 5 points each, for a total maximum score possible of 30: 

A=30-27, 
B=26-24
, C=25-21
, D=20-18, 
F=17 or less








PS -
To complete the course, students must attend a minimum number of class sessions under NUCB guidelines, and must also submit "finished" case study and insight note. If either of these conditions are not let, the course grade will automatically be given as "F"

Prof. NIGEL DENSCOMBE

OVERVIEW

Nigel is a “hybrid” businessperson standing at the intersection of two key roles: global manager/owner and business educator.
