授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course
Industrial organization studies how firms interact and compete with each other in the market. The purpose of this course is to introduce the main concepts and analytical tools of industrial organization. This course intends to provide students with a solid understanding of the impact of the firms’ behaviour on various market outcomes, such as prices, quality, varieties of products, and the associated welfare properties. This course serves as a foundation course to prepare students for further study in the area of industrial organization. It is also helpful for those students who plan to pursue careers in public policy analysis and management consulting sectors.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods
• Students are supposed to have some background in microeconomics.
• Students are recommended to devote at least 3 hours to individual preparation for each case. They should complete the mandatory readings, as part of the self-learning process, in order to learn the necessary fundamentals, concepts and theories that allow them to understand and be prepared for each lecture.
• Additional readings are suggested for those students who wish to acquire deeper insights.
• In the case method form, students are asked to speak in a propositive manner during class and acquire a thorough understanding of the discussion.
• Comments and feedback of the reports are provided two weeks after the submission.
Preparation Report
• Case: Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox
• Assignment: More detailed requirements are announced at the beginning of the first lecture day.
• Deadline: Before the class begins on Day 3.
• Submission method: Reports must be submitted in hard copy to the administration office by the deadline.
• Notes: The preparation report counts for 20% of the final grade.
Final report
• Case: Students can choose one of the eight cases taught during this course as the final report case.
• Assignment: More detailed requirements are announce at the beginning of the first lecture day.
• Deadline: At the end of the class on last day.
• Submission method: Reports must be submitted in hard copy to the administration office by the deadline.
• Notes: The final report counts for 30% of the final grade.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor
Dongyu Guo received a Ph.D. in economics from the Humboldt University of Berlin (HU), and an M.Sc. in statistics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Her research interests lie primarily in the fields of industrial organization, competition policy, regulation, and, more broadly, applied microeconomic theory. She has published in the main international economics journals in her research field (International Journal of Industrial Organization, etc.), as well as in general interest economics journals (such as European Economic Review).
(実務経験 Work experience)
Prior to joining NUCB Business School in 2020, she was a Research Fellow for the Chair of Microeconomics and International Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.
