授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

There is an increasing attention on the creation of innovation amongst large corporation, family business and even startups. However, till date, there is a lack of understanding on how organisation or individual can create innovation that meets end users’ needs. The way towards innovation is more than just applying “problem solving”approach. Corporate practitioners are required to learn new form of methodological approach that enables them to think and create new products and services that are users’ centric and innovative. To achieve innovation and creativity, “Design Thinking” is evident as a powerful concept and practical methodology that has been successfully employed by corporations, such as IDEO (Design & Consulting), Apple (Technology), SAP (IT) and Academic Institutions, such as Stanford University D School (New product development), as well as NUCB Business School (Area Innovation). Thus, this course aims to introduce the concepts of innovation and learn the methodology of design thinking through case studies, case simulation, and apply the learnings on a real context of a local town in Chiba prefecture in Japan as our social Innovation project.

事前学修と事後学修の内容、レポート、課題に対するフィードバック方法 Pre- and Post-Course Learning, Report, Feedback methods

Part I: Introductory Concept
Learn about the concept using normal cases (about 10-15 pages) through preparatory discussion and deep analysis in class

Part II: Deepening Concept
Learn about by using short cases (about 5 pages or lesser) through discussion in class using case study method.


Part III: Experience concept
Apply and practice of learnings by using case simulation and exercises. A few
essential tools in Design Thinking will also be taught in class to equip students.

Part IV: Applying concept
A real case based on the context of regional revitalisation project in Japan will be used for discussion. Guest speaker will be invited into class to give perspectives
and insights.

Theme V: Validate the concept
Reflection on the concept and apply design thinking on any chosen organsiation as a final report.


Course work

(I) Case Preparatory report (2 cases)
Case    :”Design Thinking and Innovation at Apple”(for Day 1)
:”IDEO: Human-Centred Service Design”(for Day 2)
Deadline   :Submit hardcopy in class on the assigned day
Submission method:Deliver by hand to the lecturer in the classroom, 5 A4 sheets max, powerpoint is not acceptable.

(II) Final report (30%)

Two Reports
Report 1 : Th assignment is a summary report based on the project work completed in class (15%) - 10 A4 sheets max
Report 2  :The assignment is to apply the Design Thinking methodology on any chosen organisation or community (15%)- 10 A4 sheets max
All report templates will be provided in class
Deadline  :13 May 2019 (Wed), 1200hrs (2 weeks after end of course)
Submission method:Submit soft copy via google classroom

授業調査に対するコメント Comment on Course Evaluation

Please note that there may be some overlapping content/case coverage with other innovation related courses, such as “Design Thinking”or “Service Design” course. It is advisable for students who have already taken similar subjects to consider deepening their knowledge and practice through this course.

Final individual evaluation will be subjected to score moderation based on entire class performance at end of course.
This course is taught for the second time at the graduate level in the campus. So there may be adjustment to the content or teaching style as when as it is needed.

担当教員のプロフィール About the Instructor 


Dr Goi is a professor in the Faculty of Management at NUCB Business School. He received his PhD in Media and Governance from Keio University and MBA at Waseda University in Japan. His research and teaching fields include Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Development. Dr Goi has rich experience in management research about student-based venture creation in Japan and the ASEAN region. His publication titled “Dynamic Capability for the Success of Student-Based Gestation Ventures” was awarded the Best Journal Paper Award at the 12th Association for Policy Informatics Conference held in Japan in 2016. In recent years, Goi Hoe Chin employed collaborative and remote based design thinking methods to create solutions for regional towns in Chiba, Kanagawa, Aichi and Gifu prefectures in Japan. His corporate partners include Toyota Corporation, Ricoh Corporation, Tokyu Land Corporation, Ena Kawakamiya, Showa Lifestyle Museum etc. The design thinking project with Toyota Corporation was chosen as a “Best Partnership Award” (Finalist) at AMBA & BGA’s Excellence Awards in 2021.

(実務経験 Work experience)


Prior to his academic and research work, Dr has possessed diverse working experienced in private, government and non profit sector in Singapore for more than 10 years. He has served as a manager in several regional Community Development Councils (government) in Singapore for about 10 years. He has contributed to the development and implementation of regional policies, and organised community and welfare projects that created social impact on the local community.

In addition, Dr has also acted at the Assistant Director in National Volunteerism and Philanthropy Centre to develop partnership development and consultation on corporate social responsibility (CSR) program for several corporation, such as, Avanade (Asia) and DHL (Singapore).
