授業の概要 Course Overview

Misson Statementとの関係性 / Connection to our Mission Statement

To lead an organization or community, conducting discussions is an effective method to engage multiple members and to define direction. This course for beginners focuses on improvement of skill to facilitate discussions.

授業の目的(意義) / Importance of this course

This course, while primarily a seminar program, is offered as an opportunity to understand from various angles the "case method," an interesting but hard-to-grasp teaching and learning approach, rather than to directly gain skills or knowledge. Instead of lecturing, the instructor intends to support participants in the process of understanding the case method by repeated discussion-based classroom sessions.

While not impossible to understand the case method through self-study, it is inefficient. The core of case method comprehension is believed to be formed only through participation in classes emphasizing discussion, and fully grasping the case method may not be possible unless building an understanding by obtaining immediate answers to simple impromptu questions. The most significant value of this course lies in the opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in two days of guided classroom sessions focusing on discussions led by the instructor.

Participants in this course are assumed to include: 1) those with strong interest in profound case method learning who want to maximize its potential; 2) those who have just started teaching or are thinking about teaching by using the case method; and 3) those who need to understand management points of practices of case method instruction.

This course is open to participants with any experience or expertise. Prospective participants 2) above include teachers at senior and junior high schools as well as at elementary school. The instructor himself is originally of the pedagogy domain and taught the teacher education program at a university in Tokushima until last year, gaining a good understanding of schoolteachers. A business school may sound hard to approach, yet this course is geared to and welcomes diverse participants. Everyone is encouraged to join the course at NUCB Business School with peace of mind.

It is the instructor's hope that the takeaway from this course leads participants to subsequent forward-looking practices, including: enrolling at an education institution utilizing the case method of instruction; deepening learning at a NUCB Executive courses they are currently taking; writing cases and undertaking instruction using the case method; and managing case method education programs.
